What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Le Pendentif is praised as a pretty, unique monument and a quiet discovery in Valence, often overlooked by locals. While some find it a bit hidden and obscured by trees, its historical significance as a funerary stele and its distinctive architectural 'pendentif' feature make it a worthwhile find for those seeking local curiosities.
"This funerary monument from 1548, called "Le Pendentif", occupied the center of the bell tower located to the north of the cathedral. In 1796 it was expropriated by the revolution, and sold as national property to a seller of alcoholic beverages. The Valence town council bought it in 1831 and restored it. Later, it was inscribed on the first list of historical monuments, in 1840. At first it was a much more decorated monument, with stained glass and elements of all kinds attached to its façade, but the religious wars destroyed it quite a bit. The name "pendentif" is in reference to the architectural elements. A "pendentif" (pendentif in Spanish) is each of the structural and constructive elements that resolves the meeting between the circular base of a dome and a lower square-shaped space. In the case of the "pendentif" of Valence, the pendentives are joined together to directly form the dome."

The Architectural Marvel of Pendentives
In the case of Valence's 'Le Pendentif,' the pendentives are not merely decorative but are the very elements that directly form the dome. This creates a visually striking and structurally efficient design. Understanding this architectural principle enhances the appreciation of the monument's historical and engineering significance, making it more than just an old stone structure.
A Monument's Tumultuous History
Further damage occurred during the religious wars, which significantly diminished its original elaborate decoration, including stained glass and facade elements. Despite these adversities, its architectural importance was recognized, leading to its inscription on the first list of historical monuments in 1840. This journey from religious artifact to revolutionary spoil and finally to a protected historical monument underscores its resilience and enduring significance.
