Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum for its nostalgic charm and budget-friendly admission, especially for fans of the classic Gendarme films. The exhibits, including vintage cars and uniforms, are a hit, and the friendly staff enhance the experience. Some find it 'so-so' if unfamiliar with the movies, but overall, it's a recommended quick visit.

"Great little museum. It will make you feel nostalgic if you were a fan of the movies about St Tropez gandarmerie back in the days. Reasonable price of the tickets however, it would be useful to have either machine to change notes into coins or get newer model of commemorative coin machine that accepts credit cards payments."

"I’m glad that the building now serves as a museum dedicated not only to the gendarmerie but also to the films shot in Saint-Tropez — and not just the ones with Louis de Funès. When I visited about 25 years ago, the street still passed right by the house as it did in the movies, and the building was in terrible condition. Today, it’s a completely different story — much improved, and the exhibition is definitely worth seeing. Admission is also very reasonably priced. We spent just under an hour here and really enjoyed it. As I said, I’m happy to see how much has changed for the better. I can’t forget to mention the very friendly staff — they deserve praise! Highly recommended!"

"Beautiful place and near to port. There is an entrance fee if you like to see more but good to get a selfie with the picture at entrance."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Gendarme Films and Their Legacy

The Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum owes much of its charm to the beloved French film series, the Gendarme de Saint-Tropez. Starring the iconic Louis de Funès, these comedies from the 1960s and 70s depicted the misadventures of a bumbling gendarmerie brigade in the picturesque town of Saint-Tropez. The films were a massive success, cementing Saint-Tropez's image as a sun-drenched, glamorous destination and making the gendarmerie characters household names in France and beyond. Reddit

Visitors often express a strong sense of nostalgia when exploring the museum, recalling childhood memories of watching these hilarious movies. The exhibits, featuring vintage cars and uniforms that were actually used in the films, bring these cinematic memories to life. It's this direct connection to popular culture that makes the museum a unique and heartwarming experience for many. Reddit

Saint-Tropez's Broader Cinematic Footprint

While the Gendarme films are a central theme, the museum also acknowledges Saint-Tropez's wider role in cinema. The town's stunning coastal scenery and vibrant atmosphere have attracted filmmakers for decades, leading to its appearance in numerous other French and international productions. The museum dedicates space to showcasing this broader cinematic heritage, offering a more comprehensive look at the town's relationship with the film industry. Reddit

This aspect of the exhibition appeals to a wider audience, including those who may not be intimately familiar with the Gendarme comedies. It provides an interesting historical context for Saint-Tropez's enduring appeal as a filming location. By exploring these different facets of cinema, the museum offers a layered experience that celebrates both specific iconic films and the town's general allure on the silver screen. Reddit
