What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Château de la Roche-Courbon for its magnificent formal gardens and the fascinating prehistoric caves. The château interior, though not photographable, is appreciated for its history and ornate details, especially the hand-painted ceilings. The on-site cafe and peaceful motorhome parking are also noted positives.
"A typical elegant French chateau with massive manicured grounds. We arrived in the rain and settled down to a comforting coffee in the cafe just outside the grounds, that we returned to for lunch. Unfortunately our coffee stop meant that we missed the morning chateau tour, so we started our exploration around the grounds, initially in the rain, however there were several indoor exhibitions about the history, including the prehistoric history of the the chateau and grounds. As the rain turned to dry and then sunshine we explored the wonderful expansive formal gardens. Plenty of photo opportunities. After a lunch break we returned for the afternoon chateau tour. Unfortunately no photos are allowed inside. The guided tour was undertaken by our guide in French, although there was a written your briefing in English, the guide went into a lot more detail than the briefing, probably the only negative we had. It was a lengthy and enjoyable tour.
At 15€ for entry to the gardens sand tour or 12€ just for entry to the gardens we felt it was good value and we'll worth the trip."

"Interesting gardens and grounds. Sadly not all the signs and exhibits had English translations which limited our understanding of some parts.
Quite a contrast to UK historical gardens where it seems usual to try to revert back to an earlier historical layout (for example as designed by Capability Brown or a medieval underlying structure) the gardens here have continued to evolve quite dramatically as recent owners have different visions to the past.
No cafe in October."
