"These salt marshes are set in a quiet area behind the commercial port in Porto-Vecchio.
There are sandy pathways leading around the edge of the marshes, allowing you to get quite close to the wildlife that you can see feeding on the water.
During my 1 hour walk in September I saw herons, egrets, flamingos, cormorants, gulls, dragonflies and many lizards.
Tip: wear waterproof shoes if it has been raining as some of the pathways were covered with puddles!"

The Ecology of Les Salines
The marshes are particularly renowned for their birdlife. Migratory birds often use these areas as resting and feeding grounds, making them a dynamic spectacle throughout the year. Visitors can observe wading birds like flamingos and herons, as well as various seabirds and waterfowl. The shallow, nutrient-rich waters are ideal for foraging, and the surrounding vegetation offers shelter and nesting sites.
Beyond the birds, the salt marshes are home to insects like dragonflies and reptiles such as lizards. The sandy pathways allow for close observation without disturbing the delicate balance of the ecosystem. It's a place where the interplay of water, salt, and life creates a unique and captivating natural landscape.
Photography at the Salt Marshes
For wildlife photography, patience is key. The birds, while sometimes visible from the paths, can be skittish. A telephoto lens is highly recommended to capture detailed shots of flamingos, herons, and other avian inhabitants without disturbing them. Early morning and late afternoon light often yields the most flattering illumination, enhancing the colors and textures of the landscape and its inhabitants.
When exploring for photographic subjects, consider the interplay of light and shadow on the salt pans, the patterns of the water's surface, and the silhouettes of the birds against the horizon. The juxtaposition of the natural marsh against the backdrop of the commercial port also presents an interesting visual narrative.
