Reviews Summary

Porte Maillot is a critical transport hub, but visitors frequently report being targeted by ticket scammers, leading to significant distress and financial loss. While the area offers access to attractions and dining, the prevalence of these scams overshadows the positive aspects for many, with a strong call for increased police presence and security measures. Reddit+2

"Full of scammers, trying to rob you at the ticket machines. Paris police and the transport system need to stop it. I just walked to my hotel."

Gary Casey

"Absolutely horrendous. Especially, with this place being such a pivotal point for tourists as they get off the bus coming from the airport, they should be high security in this area to protect foreigners as they come in.

My mom and I got scammed of €85 in cash trying to buy a five day ticket that will allow us to transport ourselves throughout the Paris Metro Zone.

They were two Middle Eastern people, a boy, and a girl, both between the ages of 20-30, wearing a cohesive uniform, and a tie on themselves to show that you worked with train system. THESE PPL ARE FAKE. They come off, trying to act very polite to help you, and they will explain everything. They tag themselves into the system, acting like they’re retrieving their own details. They require that you pay by cash because the machine only accepts cash. They also emphasize that you must get a day ticket, it cannot be single ticket to get to your destination. ALL OF THESE ARE FALSE. They gave us a ticket that was worth €1.90 and that stopped working on the way.

They target anybody who looks like a tourist, who’s coming with a bag and suitcase with them. The ironic thing is that everyone that passes there is aware that these people are being scammed AND NO ONE DOES ANYTHING to help them out. When we called the police, they weren’t surprised that we got scammed at this particular place. Therefore, why is it that this is repeating? Why are there no security there to protect foreigners and tourists coming into your city?

This left such a bad experience for my mother and I, so much to the point that we just wanted to take a flight ticket and return back home.

My issue is that, since this tends to repeat itself a lot, why is there no police at the station? Are the police in cahoots with them? Paris police needs to do better."

Zoe Dame

"Had similar experience with the scammers last year at this station, family of 4 with small children, but I made sure to submit an official report at the police station. Police needs to follow up with this once you make an official complaint, unfortunately most people only checks reviews of metro station only when they had bad experience so please make sure to report this to police so this could be taken seriously."

Porte Maillot is a significant transit hub, primarily serving Metro Line 1 and RER C. Line 1 is a crucial artery, connecting major Parisian landmarks from the Louvre to the Champs-Élysées. For travelers arriving from Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) airports, Porte Maillot is a common arrival point via airport buses or RER connections. While the station itself is noted for offering step-free access on Line 1, transfers at other interconnected stations, like Châtelet-Les Halles, can be more challenging with luggage, often involving escalators and elevators. Reddit

It's essential to be aware of your surroundings at Porte Maillot, particularly around the ticket machines. This area has been identified as a hotspot for ticket scams targeting tourists. Scammers, often posing as transport officials with fake IDs, will offer 'assistance' to buy tickets, insisting on cash payments and overcharging. Always purchase tickets directly from official RATP machines or counters and never hand over cash to unsolicited helpers. Reddit+2

For a smoother experience, consider using the official RATP app to plan your journeys and check for any service disruptions. Familiarizing yourself with the station layout beforehand can also reduce stress, especially if you have a connecting train or are navigating with heavy bags. Reddit

Exploring the Promenade Pereire

The Promenade Pereire offers a tranquil escape from the urban bustle of Porte Maillot. This beautiful, tree-lined walkway was ingeniously built on the former railway line that once connected Porte Maillot to Pont Cardinet. Its creation in 1889 was a significant urban development, named in honor of the influential Pereire brothers, prominent bankers and parliamentarians of the 19th century who played a key role in the 17th arrondissement's growth. Instagram

Today, the promenade is a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike, perfect for a leisurely stroll, a jog, or simply enjoying a moment of peace amidst nature. Its verdant setting provides a stark contrast to the surrounding city, making it an ideal location for photography, especially during the spring and summer months when it's in full bloom. Instagram
