What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Grotte de Trabuc for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the unique '100,000 Soldiers' formation and impressive water features. The cool, refreshing temperature makes it a great escape from summer heat. While the extensive stairs and occasional low ceilings require physical ability, most find the experience well worth the effort and good value for money.
"Our visit was during late September. No guided tours, but we had the caves almost to ourselves - only saw six other people during our time in the caves. The entrance is through a cafe/gift shop followed by displays of photos showing the caves during their discovery and exploration along with the construction of the access tunnel to allow tourists to access the caves. The heavy steel door signifies that you are entering the cave system. Ste straight, flat access tunnel is short and you are soon on steel steps that take you down past some huge examples of 'liquid stone' that has been deposited by water over long periods of time. It is really difficult to describe the size and beauty of these caves. There are numerous exceptional examples of rim-pools and curtains and at the end the forest of small stalagmites is breathtaking. The waterfall into a large, shallow pool is wonderful and the flooded lower section (further on) that is lit so that you can see further into the water filled caves beyond is very intriguing. It hints at the enormous extent of this cave system. There are hand drawn maps of the caves that put Trabuc into context and make you wonder how much more is yet to be explored.
The number of steps required to reach the furthest point accessible means you need to be able bodied and comfortable climbing up and down stairs. The caves are sensitively lit, but some people may find a torch makes them more sure-footed. There is no music or coloured lighting show in these caves; they are more than enough without additional effects.
The gift shop offers a lot on non-cave items along with the usual mineral samples and beads (from China?) - it would be nice to buy a tumbled or natural specimen of local stone as a momento.
Very well worth a visit and good value given the power and maintenance required to keep them safe and accessible. Come early in the year, or like us, later in September and enjoy the beauty and silence of the caves without the crowds. Brilliant!"

"The cave is very nice and well maintained. For taller people it can be quite challenging to walk as the ceiling is quite low in some areas (I estimate it at 195 cm). Do be prepared to walk a significant amount of stairs. If you are willing to do this, than also be prepared for a stunning view!"
