"Funky hip and so different to the panier area of Marseille. The art, graffiti, shops felt to be how rhe old Marseille was before the touristy area emerged. If you want to discover a very different and safe part of Marseille, I would suggest coming to this area. Second hand clothing shops, cafes, restaurants, Moroccan and Turkish shops, local artists come to this end of town!"

Charlene Elliott

"The area is really nice to look at, but unfortunately due to some individuals hanging around there, makes you feel quite tense when you walk around the area, especially at night! I definitely wouldn't use this metro area after sunset. The square upstairs is nice though, lots of great places to drink and eat."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Cours Julien

Cours Julien is renowned for its vibrant and ever-changing street art scene. The area is a canvas for local and international artists, featuring everything from large-scale murals to intricate graffiti tags. The iconic colorful staircase is a must-see, marking the entrance and setting the tone for the artistic exploration that awaits. Wandering through the narrow streets and alleys reveals a dynamic gallery, with new pieces appearing regularly and older ones fading or being painted over, making each visit a unique experience. Reddit

Beyond the visual spectacle, the street art in Cours Julien is often seen as a form of urban expression and cultural commentary. It reflects the alternative, bohemian spirit of the neighborhood. Visitors often describe the art as 'gems' waiting to be discovered, emphasizing the joy of stumbling upon unexpected masterpieces. The sheer density and variety of styles contribute to the area's unique character, making it a significant draw for art lovers and photographers alike. TikTok

While the art is a major attraction, it's important to note that the cleanliness and atmosphere of the area can be a mixed bag. Some reviews mention litter and a less-than-pleasant smell in certain spots, which can detract from the artistic experience. However, many still find the artistic merit and the 'funky, hip' vibe worth the visit, especially during the day. Reddit

Navigating the Vibe: Safety and Atmosphere

Cours Julien is often described as a 'funky, hip' and 'alternative' neighborhood, a stark contrast to more touristy areas like Le Panier. This alternative vibe is a significant part of its appeal, with a concentration of second-hand clothing shops, local artist studios, and unique boutiques. The upper square is noted as a pleasant spot with good places to drink and eat, offering a lively atmosphere. Reddit

However, the atmosphere can be polarizing. While many appreciate the artistic energy, some visitors report feeling tense or unsafe, particularly after dark. Concerns about litter and a general sense of grittiness are mentioned in several reviews, leading some to advise against visiting the area at night. This duality means that managing expectations and planning your visit for daylight hours is often recommended for a more comfortable experience. Reddit

Despite these concerns, the artistic and creative scenery is consistently praised. The colorful stairs and graffiti are highlighted as a major draw, creating a visually stimulating environment. For those seeking a less conventional and more authentic slice of Marseille, Cours Julien offers a unique urban exploration, provided one is mindful of the surroundings. Reddit
