What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the breathtaking views from Fort l'Écluse, especially after conquering the challenging climb up its many steps. While the fort's historical architecture and the adventurous via ferrata are highlights, some find the interior exhibitions to be eclectic and not always focused on military history. The climb is strenuous but rewarding, with the views being the primary draw for many.
"An interesting building/location and wonderful views across the area - if you’re brave enough to walk up the 850+ steps.
You’re not allowed access to the top fort - I think this is only for people who’ve paid extra (a lot extra!) to do the ‘parcour’ tour, so that was a bit disappointing. There’s so much scope for having in depth exhibitions on the history of the the fort and its military occupants and having an actual museum (which is what I’d expected) but this was minimal - instead there was a small wildlife photography exhibition and an exhibition on global weather systems - which was unexpected and a bit odd!
There were also loads of empty rooms and some covered in graffiti.
The highlight is the view from the top, just below the upper fort and this is what you are essentially paying for. If you don’t want to/or can’t walk up the 850+ steps I would not bother paying for entry as there is not really much else to see or do inside the building - once you’ve looked in one dusty empty room you’ve seen them all - You can take in the grandeur and location of the building without actually going inside.
Be aware the parking area is quite small and if you have an RV or it’s busy you may have to park on one of the lay-bys on the road outside"

"It was a sunny day with few clouds protecting the fort; when I looked at its height, I felt I was back in time.
How has it stood like that for hundreds of years, shaped into the rock?
It is a well-preserved Ford, and I am glad there is no elevator and the stars are authentic. You go back in history if you climb over 800 stars, but you need some athletic training, which is not for anyone. In any case, the staff will ask you about your fitness level, and you will answer some fitness questions for your safety.
We did not go to the top because it was the climbing season, but it did not matter because a terrace near the top allowed us to admire the Rhone Valley.
Inside, there are permanent and temporary exhibitions and a lovely souvenir shop!
The employees are friendly, and there is also a small terrace with local beer, tea and coffee.❤️"

"Great place to watch live music or for various other cultural events throughout the year. The views are breathtaking and the history of the fort itself is very interesting. If you are feeling fit there are 1165 steps to climb to the top fort or for the more adventurous there is a moderately difficult via ferrata."
