"Very nice museum. The building itself is very interesting, built like a bunker. The contents are also very interesting there are a lot of really amazing artifacts. They have a lot of kid stuff so it seems to be one of the most family friendly museums I have seen. Would highly recommend visiting.

"This was a fantastic museum for anyone with even a slight interest in history. Focused on the Roman Empire and how they founded what is now Lyon back in 43BC. The building itself is amazing. You street at the top which is basically chrome level and you work your way down over 5 levels. Plenty of space and really easy to move around. So many pieces to look at. I was surprised at how well preserved many of them were. Some good interactive sections specifically for kids were also good to see. We got an entry included in our Lyon city pass but considering the size of the museum the entry price is very good. Well worth going to see when you head up to the Basilica."

"In a word: stunning. The museum holds many very important works of art from the early Roman Empire, some without parallel anywhere else. Admission is free for students and seniors, and for all others, the ticket cost is low. Audio guides are free and available in many languages. The museum itself, carefully hidden inside a hill, is a marvel of modern architecture.
This should be a thorough visit because the collections are very extensive."

The Architectural Genius of Lugdunum
Visitors often remark on how the building itself feels like an exhibit. The way the natural slope of the hill is utilized means that each level offers a different perspective, both of the collections and of the surrounding landscape. This thoughtful design ensures that the museum is accessible and engaging, allowing for a seamless flow between different historical periods and themes. The 'bunker-like' exterior belies the light and airy interior, a testament to its innovative construction.
This architectural approach enhances the visitor experience by creating a sense of discovery. As you move from one level to the next, you're not just seeing artifacts; you're experiencing them within a space that respects and complements their historical significance. It’s a prime example of how contemporary design can elevate and honor ancient heritage.
Key Roman Artifacts You Can't Miss
Another highlight is the Circus Mosaic, a rare and vivid depiction of a Roman chariot race. This artwork not only showcases the artistic skill of the era but also provides invaluable insight into the popular entertainment and social life of the time. The intricate details bring the excitement of the ancient hippodrome to life.
Don't overlook the Sarcophagus of the Triumph of Bacchus, an elaborately carved marble sarcophagus that illustrates the mythical conquests of the god of wine. The craftsmanship is exquisite, and it serves as a powerful symbol of Roman funerary art and religious beliefs. The Lyon-Vaise Hoard, a collection of silverware and jewelry, offers a glimpse into personal wealth and the precautions taken during times of unrest.
A Family-Friendly Historical Journey
The museum's layout, descending through different levels, can also be an adventure in itself for children. The sheer volume of well-preserved artifacts, from pottery to coins, provides plenty of visual interest. The free audio guides, often available in child-friendly formats or with engaging narratives, can further enhance their learning experience.
