What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Fourvière Funicular is praised as a practical and charming way to reach the basilica and enjoy stunning city views, being part of the public transport network. However, a significant concern raised by multiple visitors is the prevalence of pickpocketing, with organized groups targeting tourists at ticket machines and on board.
"PICKPOCKETS territory! Don’t except help from anyone by the ticket machines that’s were it’s starts to identify if you are have cards on you. They will tell you the tap and pay isn’t working so you have to produce a card to get a ticket. Once you have been identified young girls will start to stand very close to you as you queue. Some wear face masks. When you step onto the tram one or two will start asking you about the train and block your forward space - this is when they will take your wallet and leave the train and before they have left the station some is waiting with a card reader. They will try for over €1000 on the first go and reduce the amounts from there. If that doesn’t work they will go to the shop next door. Luckily I only carry one travel card with me when out and about with only €200 loaded at a time. I realised what had happened very quickly and froze my card. So they just got an old purse and a bit of cash. But it could have been much worse. I’ve made this a five star review in the hopes people will read it. The ride itself is the best way to get to the see the area."

"Very well organized. Easy access for wheelchair. The ticket is a bit expensive but since you can use it for other transports in the city is fine."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Once at the top, the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière is impressive, and the open space around it is great for kids to explore. The nearby Roman theaters offer a glimpse into history that can spark their imagination. Pack snacks and water, as options at the very top can be limited and pricey. Be extra vigilant about belongings due to pickpocketing risks.
💰 Budget Travelers
This is a much cheaper alternative to dedicated tourist buses or taxis. Once at the top, the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière is free to enter, and the panoramic views are priceless. Pack your own lunch and snacks to save money on dining at the tourist hotspots.
🚶 Solo Travelers
However, solo travelers should be particularly aware of their surroundings due to the reported pickpocketing risks. Keep your bag secure and be wary of anyone approaching you with offers of help at the ticket machines. The views from the basilica are a great opportunity for solo reflection and photography.

Navigating the Funicular System
Tickets are integrated with the broader Lyon public transport network (TCL). This means you can use a standard single ticket, a day pass, or any other valid TCL travel card. This makes it an economical choice compared to other tourist transport options. The funiculars run frequently, so waiting times are usually minimal, especially outside of peak tourist seasons.
Important Note on Safety: While the funicular system is efficient, travelers have reported significant issues with pickpocketing, particularly around the ticket machines and on the carriages. Be extremely cautious of anyone offering assistance with ticket purchases or attempting to distract you. It's crucial to be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables secure at all times.
The Allure of Fourvière Hill
Beyond the basilica, the hill provides unparalleled panoramic views of Lyon. From the esplanade, you can see the entire city spread out below, including the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, the historic Old Town, and the distant Alps on a clear day. This viewpoint is a must-see for any visitor wanting to grasp the scale and beauty of Lyon.
Exploring Fourvière also includes the ancient Roman theaters (Théâtres Romains de Fourvière), remnants of Lyon's Roman past, and the Musée de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine. The funicular provides easy access to this historical and scenic area, making it a perfect half-day excursion.
