Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Église Saint-Étienne de Lille for its beautiful Italian Baroque interior and its historical significance as a former Jesuit site. The rare opportunity to attend a traditional Latin Mass is a particularly moving experience for many. Some note ongoing exterior renovations, but the interior remains a compelling draw. Reddit

"I stayed across the street, in the Aparthotel Adagio Lille, from the Eglise Saint Etienne, St. Stephens Church. The exterior of the church is undergoing a renovation but it is inspiring to see a structure standing on the site of a Jesuit chapel which was built in 1610. It is reported to be one of the largest Jesuit churches still standing in France.

Having attended Jesuit high school and university, I felt touched by the link to my modern education with an ancient Jesuit chapel and college site. Strange, I know.

I was able to attend the Sunday morning mass, in Latin thank goodness, something I haven't done in a very long time. It was very emotional to experience the priest, flanked by two altar boys (terminology from my past when I was a grade school altar boy), walking the aisle blessing everyone with holy water from an aspergillum (a hand held container used to splash holy water onto believers)

I would have attached more photos but it just didn't seem respectful to film when churchgoers were attending a service"
