The trophy of Augustus. The Tropaeum Alpium celebrates the emperor Augustus’s victory over the 45 tribes who populated the Alps. The monument’s ruins - along the Via Julia Augusta - are in La Turbie. It is considered to be a model for or reflection of the Mausoleum of Augustus in Rome.

We hiked uphill from Cap d’Ail to la Turbie: walking on the Via Julia Augusta, on the same steps and stones as Roman soliders, 2029 years ago. Mind blown. They erected the Trophy of Augustus above the town of La Turbie to celebrate the victory of Emperor Augustus (the adopted son of Julius Caesar) over the people of the Alps, who refused to be ruled by the Roman Empire. Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Trophy of Augustus as a 'hidden gem' with 'breathtaking' panoramic views over Monaco and the coast. The well-structured museum and the opportunity to climb the monument are frequently highlighted positives. Some note that the museum's video content is in French and that the monument is a reconstructed ruin, but overall, it's considered a worthwhile historical site.

"Marvellous place, hidden Augustean gem in La Turbie. The museum is also very well structured, and the view is breathtaking. The woman working at the information point was gentle and very cultured. I felt emotional to come here, as an big fan of Ancient Rome."

"An extraordinary place, well worth a visit. The panorama from there is breathtaking with views over the whole of Monaco. The monument itself is well presented and allows close inspection, you can even climb up to a high viewpoint."

Bruce Bracken

"This is a ruin of a Roman centre. The French briefly reconstructed it to how it is now back in 1934. It’s €7 for adults, and free for under 18’s. I wouldn’t follow goggle maps directions as they lead you to a gate that is shut. Instead follow the signs to the trophy and there is a large air conditioned office in which you buy tickets. You can buy a combination ticket which is €16 for the Greek villa, but that is not local and around a 20 minute drive.
You can climb the trophy and get great views. The stairs have handrails and the last few steps go round to take you up.

There is a small museum which tells you the history of the trophy. The video is in French. Plenty of placards with information in different languages.

Not much else to do except look at the trophy and small gardens surrounding it."

The Monument's Grandeur and Reconstruction

The Trophy of Augustus (Tropaeum Alpium) is a monumental structure built in 6 AD to celebrate Emperor Augustus's victory over the 45 tribes inhabiting the Alps. Originally standing at an impressive 50 meters high, it was a powerful symbol of Roman dominance and marked the boundary of the vast empire. Its strategic location in La Turbie offered commanding views, visible even from the sea. Instagram+1

While much of the original monument has been lost to time and plundering, it underwent significant reconstruction in the early 20th century. This restoration, while not perfectly replicating the original appearance due to a lack of definitive historical records, has preserved the site and made it accessible to visitors. The current structure, standing at about 36 meters, allows for exploration and offers a tangible connection to Roman history. InstagramReddit

Visitors can climb the restored monument, navigating stairs and handrails to reach viewpoints that offer breathtaking panoramas. The experience allows one to appreciate the scale of the original construction and the strategic importance of its placement. Reddit+1
