Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Monkey Mountain for its unique and fun experience, highlighting the friendly, free-roaming macaques and the knowledgeable, approachable staff. The opportunity to feed the monkeys and see babies is a major draw. Some mention it can get crowded and hot in peak season, and emphasize the importance of respecting the wild animals.

"We visited Monkey Mountain today and we had so much fun! The monkeys roam freely throughout the park and get really close to people. You are not supposed to touch them or anything, but they do not seem to mind people being near them. There are many workers in the park, and all of them were very friendly and offered to answer any questions we had about the monkeys. Many of the workers spoke French, English, and German fluently. Killian asked us if we had any questions about the monkeys and explained to us about the different groups of monkeys in the park and even showed us where there was a baby monkey with its mom. We learned a lot about the park and monkeys from him.

It was really hot when we were there and many of the monkeys were taking naps or relaxing but they were still visible, active, and fun to watch. We got to see a number of younger monkeys jumping off tree branches into a small pool of water for fun. There were some newborn baby monkeys visible as well.

After leaving the monkey area, there were little talks and activities along the path. There was a gift shop and then an adventure playground where my kids spent so much time climbing around. The park also has a Cafe with drinks and snacks.

Parking was free and readily available. Overall this was a fun place to visit for people of all ages."

"This place was awesome. The monkeys just walk around unbothered, the staff are super friendly and we caught it at a time when there were so many sweet babies to see. Be respectful and follow the rules... Some don't, which is unfortunate. These are wild animals not pets."

The staff is incredibly friendly, professional, and shares lots of fascinating information – you can tell they truly love their work and care for the animals. At the end, you even receive wonderful photos of your visit as a keepsake. The park is well-maintained, natural, and perfect for animal and nature lovers. Highly recommended!"

The Barbary Macaque: A Conservation Story

Monkey Mountain, or La Montagne des Singes, is more than just an attraction; it's a vital sanctuary for the Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus). This species is native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco, but its wild populations are critically endangered due to habitat loss and illegal pet trade. The park plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, providing a safe environment for over 200 macaques and contributing to breeding programs. Visitors get a unique chance to observe these intelligent primates in a semi-wild setting, fostering a deeper appreciation for their plight. Instagram+1

During your visit, you'll notice the social structure of the macaques. They live in complex family groups, and you might witness interactions like grooming, playing, and caring for their young. The park's guides are excellent resources for understanding these behaviors and the specific challenges faced by the Barbary macaque. Learning about their conservation status makes the experience even more impactful, turning a fun outing into an educational one. Reddit

The park's commitment to the macaques' well-being is evident in its design, which mimics their natural forest habitat. This allows visitors to see the monkeys behaving as they would in the wild, from foraging for food to playing in water features. It’s a testament to successful habitat preservation and a model for other wildlife sanctuaries. Instagram

An Unforgettable Feeding Experience

One of the most memorable aspects of visiting Monkey Mountain is the opportunity to feed the Barbary macaques popcorn. This interactive experience is a highlight for many visitors, offering a chance to get up close and personal with these curious animals. You can purchase special popcorn at the park, designed to be a safe and appealing treat for the monkeys. TikTokInstagram

When you offer the popcorn, the monkeys are often eager to take it directly from your hand. It's a moment of pure joy and connection, especially for children. The guides ensure that the feeding is done respectfully and safely, reminding visitors to follow the park's rules and not to force interaction. This controlled feeding helps maintain the monkeys' natural foraging behaviors while providing an incredible visitor experience. Reddit

For an even more exclusive encounter, consider the 'Breakfast with the Monkeys' experience. This special program allows you to feed the macaques in a more intimate setting, often at the beginning of the day. It's an unforgettable way to start your visit and often includes professional photos to capture the magical moments. InstagramReddit
