"Beautiful architecture with interesting stained glass and a unique orgue."

Mihai Stroe

"A beautiful church in a great setting."

Billy Porter

"A modern design church built with love truly a work of art & a place of prayer & with the hand design 🙏 close to the heavens ✨️A small chapel, built in 1940, situated in the center of the Alpe d'Huez, was initially dedicated to the Marian cult. In 1960, the priest, Jaap Reuten, asked Jean Le Boucher and architect Jean Marol to build a church-shaped tent, representing Abraham, the first Biblical patriarch, to replace the chapel with a structure visible from the Meije, in preparation for the Olympic Games of 1968.

Stained glass windows surround the nave, oval, representing the life of Jesus Christ according to the Gospel of Mark, made by the artist Arcabas. The church holds a crypt dedicated to St Nicolas and in the choir, there is a pipe organ, whose organ case is in the shape of hand. The instrument was designed by the composer Jean Guillou, and built by the German organ builder Detlef Kleuker."

Architectural Marvel: A Modern Sanctuary

Notre-Dame des Neiges Church in Alpe d'Huez is a testament to innovative religious architecture. Designed by Jean Marol, its most striking feature is the wooden structure that mimics an immense climber's tent, a bold departure from traditional church designs. This unique form symbolizes Abraham, the first patriarch, and was conceived to be a visible landmark from the Meije, especially in anticipation of the 1968 Olympic Games. The church's construction in the 1960s reflects a period of architectural experimentation, aiming to create a space that felt both modern and deeply spiritual. Reddit

The interior continues this theme of artistic expression. The stained glass windows, created by the renowned artist Arcabas, are not merely decorative but tell the story of Jesus Christ's life according to the Gospel of Mark. These oval windows bathe the nave in colored light, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Below the main sanctuary lies a crypt dedicated to Saint Nicolas, adding another layer of historical and spiritual significance to the site. Reddit

Perhaps the most talked-about feature is the hand-shaped pipe organ. Its unique case, designed by Jean Guillou and built by Detlef Kleuker, is a masterpiece of both artistry and engineering. The organ's presence and design contribute significantly to the church's reputation as a work of art and a place of prayer, drawing visitors who appreciate its unconventional beauty and spiritual resonance. Reddit

The Artistry of Arcabas and Jean Guillou

The artistic contributions to Notre-Dame des Neiges Church elevate it beyond a mere building to a sanctuary of art and faith. The stained glass windows by Arcabas are particularly noteworthy. Each oval pane is a vibrant narrative, illustrating key moments in the life of Jesus Christ as recounted in the Gospel of Mark. Arcabas's distinctive style imbues these scenes with a powerful emotional resonance, making the nave a living canvas of biblical stories. Reddit

Complementing the visual artistry is the sonic marvel of the pipe organ designed by Jean Guillou. Guillou, a celebrated composer and organist, collaborated with organ builder Detlef Kleuker to create an instrument that is as visually arresting as it is sonically impressive. The organ's case, famously shaped like a hand, is a bold artistic statement that immediately captures the visitor's attention. The instrument itself is known for its rich tonal palette, capable of producing a wide range of sounds that enhance worship and musical performance. Reddit

Together, Arcabas's visual storytelling and Guillou's musical masterpiece create a multi-sensory experience within Notre-Dame des Neiges. The church is not just a place to visit but a destination for those who appreciate the intersection of faith, art, and innovative design. The combination of the tent-like architecture, the narrative stained glass, and the iconic hand organ makes it a truly unforgettable site. Reddit
