"Stéphane was an exceptional tour guide! He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about braille. I am incredibly appreciative that he gave the tour in French and in English. Thank you!

I absolutely will be back! Next time I’d love to take the train from Paris and spend a couple nights in Coupvray. It was so peaceful.

At the time, they only accepted cash and NOT card. Be sure to have cash for the tour and if you want to get something from the gift shop."

"If you have half a day free in Paris, by all means go to this wonderful museum and escape the mad crowds of central Paris.
We were made to feel so welcome by Faridah. We arrived during lunch time when the museum was closed. We contacted Faridah and knowing we were waiting, she arrived earlier to make our wait shorter.
It's not enough to just walk around the birthhouse. You must go inside and for that you simply must do the tour. We learnt so many new things about Louis Braille and his life! And Faridah patiently answered all our questions. :-)
An exciting part for the children and the adults alike was learning to write our names in Braille using special punch boards.
We also loved the lovely spring garden.
We will always have very fond memories of the day. Thank you, Faridah!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Life and Legacy of Louis Braille

Louis Braille, born in Coupvray, France, in 1809, revolutionized literacy for the blind. At the age of three, he lost his sight due to an accident in his father's harness workshop. Despite this profound challenge, Braille displayed remarkable intelligence and determination. He attended the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, where he encountered Valentin Haüy's system of raised Roman letters, which proved cumbersome and inefficient. Reddit

Inspired by a military code of dots and dashes, Braille developed his own system of 6 dots, arranged in a 2x3 grid, which could represent letters, numbers, and punctuation. This system, known as Braille, was far more efficient and tactile than previous methods. It allowed blind individuals to read and write with unprecedented speed and ease, opening up a world of knowledge and independence. The museum in Coupvray celebrates his humble beginnings and the profound impact of his invention on millions worldwide. Reddit

His legacy extends beyond literacy; it embodies the power of innovation born from necessity and the importance of accessibility. The museum not only details his life but also showcases the evolution of tactile communication and the ongoing efforts to promote inclusion for visually impaired individuals. Reddit
