What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Musée Savoisien as an exceptional and highly interesting museum, particularly for its free admission and comprehensive look at Savoie's history and culture. The recent renovations have significantly enhanced the exhibits and ambiance, making it a standout attraction. Some minor inconveniences include restrictions on bags and strollers, but these are well-managed with available lockers.
"Everything here is superlative — this is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting museums in the Savoie department.
Visit this museum if:
- you are passionate about history, ethnography or art (especially folk art)
- you are planning a longer trip through the Savoie region and want to be as well-informed as possible from the start
- you are passing through the city of Chambéry and don’t have much time — start with this museum and, if you have time left, you can visit others
The museum is not very big (but on the other hand, not small either), but it is so rich in artifacts that it would be impossible to describe it in a simple review, so I will focus on the collections and exhibits I liked the most (a subjective selection, of course):
- the 3D model of the Alps
- the numerous maps which, together with the accompanying information panels, illustrate the history of the region
- the medieval religious art objects (although I am not religious)
- the weapons collection (not very large, but the pieces are beautiful and well-preserved)
- the collections of figurines made by anonymous folk craftsmen
- the models of traditional houses from the region (each one displayed on a rotating plate, so by pressing a button you can view the model from different angles)
In addition, the staff is very friendly and admission is free (but even if it were paid, I would still give it 5 stars) and
A final clarification: access is not allowed with baby strollers, trolleys, suitcases, backpacks, etc. However, you can leave your luggage at the reception."

"A superb museum that offers profound insights into the history and culture of the Savoie region. Apparently it was reopened in 2023 after a €25 million renovation and four years of work. It shows. Start at the top (second floor) and work down. The well-chosen exhibits are arranged chronologically (paleolithic - present) but there are also themes ('Power & Territory'; 'Population & Movement'; 'Resources & Food' etc.). Make sure you leave enough time to see the 14th century Cruet murals on the walkway overlooking the Reception area, which are a highlight of the museum. Discovered in the Château de la Rive in Cruet (Savoie department), these depict scenes taken from 'Girart de Vienne', an old French 'chanson de geste' by Bertrand de Bar-sur-Aube. The staff are very friendly and one gets the impression that they really want you to enjoy your visit. In short, this museum is exceptional."

"Truly excellent museum with exhibits about the history of the Savoie region and contemporary issues too. Seems hidden away, but it has been recently renovated, breathing new life into the exhibits. Staff are very friendly, and offered me an English language translation book of the main information throughout the permanent collection. There is a small museum shop and plenty of lockers next to the toilets on the first floor."
