Little memory of my biannual artist residency in Clos Sainte-Magdeleine, Cassis (France) In spite of some keys not quite springing back up, and though it’s definitely out of tune, play on the one-century old upright Steinway Vertegrand still feels awesome! The warm and knowledgeable hospitality, especially from staff like Camille, is frequently praised, making for a memorable tasting experience. "We were so pleased to discover that the Clos Ste Magdeleine winery was easily reached on foot from the town of Cassis as the wine has been recommended to us and we wanted to try something local. A really lovely lady helped us find a bottle of something to our taste (and budget) as they have a few available to try - and very patiently put up with my appalling attempts to originally converse in French! Don't be put off by the closed door. Just ring the buzzer and you'll be let in! We ended up with a great bottle of their white wine - highly recommended."

Josh O'Shaughnessy

"Had an absolutely wonderful experience at Clos Sainte-Magdeleine. We were welcomed by Camille who was very friendly and knowledgeable about the peculiarities of the wine production. All wines were stunners! Particularly liked Bel-Arme and Baume-Noire, very different from each other but equally pleasant."

Olga G

"Camille was beyond warm and welcoming! We came during the off season when tours were unavailable, yet she provided us with so much information about the wines we were purchasing. She even gave us a small taste of a few! Afterwords she walked us out- but before saying goodbye, she showed us a lovely view on the side of the building overlooking the ocean and provided us with restaurant recommendations! Lovely experience."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Terroir of Cassis Wines

Clos Sainte-Magdeleine benefits from a truly exceptional terroir. Situated on the dramatic coastal cliffs of Cassis, the vineyards are directly exposed to the Mediterranean Sea. This proximity imbues the wines with a distinctive character, most notably a subtle salinity that is a hallmark of their white wines. The sea breeze helps to regulate temperatures, protecting the grapes from excessive heat and contributing to their balanced acidity. Instagram

This unique environment, combined with the local grape varietals, allows Clos Sainte-Magdeleine to produce wines that are deeply expressive of their origin. The 'Clos' in the name signifies a walled vineyard, emphasizing the protected and specific nature of this wine-growing area. Visitors often remark on how the wine tastes like the sea, a testament to the powerful influence of this coastal setting. Instagram

Beyond the sea's influence, the region's climate, characterized by abundant sunshine and a gentle mistral wind, further aids in the healthy development of the vines. This combination of factors creates a singular profile for Cassis wines, setting them apart from other Provençal appellations and making a visit to Clos Sainte-Magdeleine a journey into a specific and celebrated wine landscape. Instagram

Experiencing the Harvest at Clos Sainte-Magdeleine

The vendanges, or grape harvest, at Clos Sainte-Magdeleine is a significant event, marking the culmination of a year's work. Social media often captures the beauty of this period, with videos showcasing the start of the harvest and the vibrant colors of the grapes. Instagram+1 This is a time when the vineyards are alive with activity, and the air is filled with the promise of the new vintage.

Witnessing the harvest offers a unique glimpse into the dedication and passion that goes into producing their wines. The process is often manual, reflecting a commitment to quality and tradition. For wine enthusiasts, experiencing this season can be incredibly rewarding, providing a deeper appreciation for the wine-making process from vine to bottle. Instagram+1

While not a typical tourist activity, if your visit coincides with the harvest, it's a special opportunity. The visual spectacle of the grapes being gathered against the backdrop of the Mediterranean is unforgettable. It's a reminder of the cyclical nature of viticulture and the deep connection between the land, the climate, and the final product. Instagram+1

The Art and Music Connection

Clos Sainte-Magdeleine has a unique connection to the arts, notably music. Pianist Pierre Hujoel has undertaken artist residencies at the estate, finding inspiration in the serene environment. Instagram+2 He describes the experience of playing on a century-old Steinway Vertegrand piano at the winery as 'awesome,' even with its quirks.

These residencies highlight a harmonious blend of nature, wine, and creativity. The tranquil setting of the vineyards, overlooking the sea, provides a muse for artists, fostering an environment where creativity can flourish. It suggests a philosophy at Clos Sainte-Magdeleine that values not just exceptional wine, but also the enrichment that the arts can bring. Instagram+2

The presence of artists like Hujoel adds another layer to the visitor experience, hinting at a place that is more than just a winery; it's a space that cultivates beauty in multiple forms. While not a primary attraction, this artistic connection adds a unique cultural dimension to the estate's appeal. Instagram+2
