"A wonderful church which is truly one of the symbols of this city. The church is in perfect harmony with the citadel that hangs over the city and guards it. Unfortunately this time we could not get inside, but what we saw from the outside made a stunning impression on us.
P.S. Lovely building and you won't be disappointed with the view inside. I was especially struck by the filigree work of metal craftsmen. Amazing pictures! Restoration work carried out at the highest level.

The cathedral is located in the town of Belfort (in Territoire de Belfort), in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, northeastern France. 
• It is the seat of the Diocèse de Belfort‑Montbéliard — i.e. the main cathedral church of that diocese. 

📜 Quick History
• Construction began in 1727 on the orders of the city (to replace an older church) under the plans of royal engineer Jacques Philippe Mareschal. 
• The main building was completed and the church opened for worship in 1750. 
• However the construction was only finally completed in 1845, with the erection of the south tower (the “second tower”). 
• In 1930, the building was officially listed as a “Monument historique” (historic monument) by France. 
• On May 9, 1952, it was given the status of a minor basilica. 
• When the Diocese of Belfort-Montbéliard was established in 1979, the church was elevated to cathedral status, becoming the formal seat of the bishop. 

Because of that, while the building dates from the 18-19th century, the cathedral as an episcopal seat is among the most recently established in France.

• The cathedral is built in a classical / neoclassical style, rather than the Gothic or Romanesque typical of many older European cathedrals. 
• The stone used is characteristic pink/red sandstone — quarried in nearby Offemont (about 3 km from Belfort). 
• Its façade is composed of three vertical parts: a central porch/portico, through which one enters the nave, flanked on either side by two towers. 
• Internally, the cathedral is richly decorated — it contains paintings, sculptures, marble altars. The sculptures are by the regional artist Antoine Cupillard; paintings by regional painter Gustave Dauphin. 
• The original wooden high altar was replaced by a marble altar (from the former Dominican church of Guebwiller) in the late 18th / early 19th century.
