What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bastia Cathedral Sainte-Marie is widely praised as one of Corsica's most beautiful churches, with visitors particularly admiring its 15th-century silver altar and unique bishop hats. While its historical and artistic significance is undeniable, some experiences have been marred by disruptive tourist behavior, highlighting the need for respectful visitation.
"Great cathedral from end of 15th century. The most important altar is a Maria's, entirely made of silver. And lovbedthe one in back, made of stone, John the Baptist with Jesus."
Rok Stražar
"Beautiful cathedral in Bastia, close to The Citadel. Both French and Italian influences.
I particularly loved the ceremonial hats of the former bishops (all of whom are now buried in the crypt) suspended from the arches by both sides of the choir.
Really peaceful - until the peace was ruined by a coach load of loud-speaking, camera-flash using tourists. Would have given five stars if they had someone on hand to prevent such disrespect behaviour."
David Simkins
"It has a cat guarding the entrance!"

The presence of the ceremonial hats of former bishops, suspended from the choir arches, adds a distinctive and somber touch, serving as a visual reminder of the church's lineage and the individuals who served there.
