Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and the connection to Van Gogh's art, finding the canal walk to be a peaceful experience. However, some are disappointed by the bridge being a reconstruction and the presence of litter and barriers, which detract from the natural beauty.

"Enjoyable walk by the canal from Arles to the bridge around 3km. Interesting old bridge and all around is very quiet and looking at the painting is fun trying to guess how Van Gogh painted it. Recommended."

Isaias Fidalgo

"This is a way to manipulate history, this replica named after the employee responsible for keeping it and manipulating it, the "Langlois bridge" acquired world renown thanks to the representations that Van Gogh made it at the end of the 19th century.

But this bridge that can be seen nowadays a few kilometers south of the city center, on the Arles channel in Bouc, is not the one painted by the artist and it is not at its initial location either.

The progress of techniques, the evolution of town planning and the vagaries of war have made us only see an identical copy, formerly installed in Fos.

However, the desire to evoke the painter, as well as to restore an old technique, made it possible to place the work in its functional integrity, and in a landscape framework close to that seen by Van Gogh."

Enjoy life

"Obviously a must see for van gogh lovers but it was a bit of a dissapointment as the site was covered in litter and empty beer cans and barriers that have been there for ages also the timber bridge nearby is dodgy watch your step when taking a photo of the reconstructed bridge ( the original has long since rotted away) and this one aint far behind it !!!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Story of the Langlois Bridge

The bridge you see today at the Langlois Bridge is not the original structure that Vincent van Gogh painted. The original Pont de Langlois was a wooden drawbridge located further south of Arles. Due to its historical significance, a replica was eventually constructed and placed in a landscape reminiscent of Van Gogh's depictions. This reconstruction aims to evoke the same atmosphere and visual inspiration that the artist experienced over a century ago. Reddit

It's important to understand that this is a recreation designed to honor Van Gogh's artistic legacy. While it may not be the exact bridge or in its original spot, it serves as a tangible connection to his time in Arles and his profound artistic output during that period. The surrounding area has also evolved, with changes in urban planning and infrastructure impacting the immediate environment. Reddit

Despite these historical nuances, visiting the Langlois Bridge offers a unique opportunity to step into Van Gogh's world. The quiet stillness of the canal and the picturesque setting can still evoke a sense of peace and artistic contemplation, allowing visitors to appreciate the landscape that so captivated the artist.
