What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Valloires Abbey is primarily celebrated for its stunning and extensive gardens, offering a peaceful and beautiful escape. While the abbey buildings provide historical context, the French-only guided tours and large group sizes can be a drawback for some. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained grounds and welcoming atmosphere, making it a worthwhile destination, especially for garden lovers.
"The guided tour of the Abbey buildings was reasonable but the buildings themselves are not spectacular and the guide talked at you not to you as if the material had to be delivered no matter what. In truth the gardens are worth 4 stars but if you are interested in gardens Maizicourt ,some 30 km down the road, are a better use of your time."

"Superb abbey, well maintained with a nice guided tour. The main attraction is the splendid park with so many different plants and colours. Entrance price is a bit steep so plan to stay all day. You can eat at the restaurant, nice food, ask for a picnic hamper or bring your own. Lots to see in the area if you're on holiday."

"A beautiful building but the visit was in a group with a guide. The group was too large and we could not all get into the large salon and the heat meant that we were flagging at the end. The guide did her best and was good but often we had difficulty hearing her and I think the gardens were better. There is no religious life left here, all the monks left long ago so it's used for children with nowhere else to go and there is an old people's home too."

The Enchanting Gardens of Valloires
Visitors often highlight the splendid park with its so many different plants and colours as a standout feature. The sheer variety ensures there's always something new to see, making it a rewarding experience for nature lovers and casual strollers alike. The gardens are not just visually appealing but also offer a sense of calm and escape, contributing to the overall historic and peaceful atmosphere of the abbey.
While the abbey buildings themselves are of historical interest, the gardens consistently receive higher praise. If your primary interest lies in botanical beauty and serene outdoor spaces, the gardens of Valloires Abbey will likely exceed your expectations. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, as you'll want to explore every inch of this horticultural gem. :seedling: :bouquet:
Understanding the Abbey Tour Experience
While the abbey buildings are historically significant, they are not described as spectacular by all visitors. The tour usually covers only a few rooms, focusing on specific aspects of the abbey's past. Given that there is no longer any religious life at the abbey, its current use as a facility for children and an elderly home means the visitor experience is focused on its heritage rather than its active spiritual life.
For those who do not speak French, or who prefer a more interactive experience, focusing on the extensive gardens might be a more fulfilling way to spend your time at Valloires. If you are keen on the abbey's history, consider researching key facts beforehand or looking for any available written materials in English to supplement the tour. :book: :fr:
