The mainland is where it’s at. Mykonos is a tourist trap for Americans and Brits. You want history. Go to Corinth. Where Corinthians was written. You want fresh seafood, go to Gytheio. A charming seaside town. You want culture. Go to Monemvasia and stay in the castle. You want an island? To to Zakynthos. Reviews Summary

Mykines is hailed as a highlight by many, offering spectacular scenery and incredible puffin encounters. While the cost and limited hiking routes are noted as drawbacks by some, the unique experience of this remote island is widely considered worth the journey and expense. Visitors emphasize the importance of booking in advance and being prepared for all types of weather.

"June 2025. Fantastic. One of the highlights of our two weeks in the Faroe Islands. We booked the ferry in advance but could have saved some money by paying the hiking fee online instead of when we got there. Don’t skip the hike. It’s worth the money."

Bridget Bielinski

"To get to Mykines you must catch a ferry from Sørvágur which departs only twice a day and can be impacted by the very wild and changeable weather. Ferry tickets must be purchased in advance and the availability is seasonal.

You must also pay for a compulsory guide - a fee of 250DK when we did it and the group size is about 15-20 people. You can book a private guide if you wish.

As for the Island. The scenery is spectacular and the hike is fairly easy (although the footing can be quite slippery). The weather changes very quickly so be prepared. Appropriate boots, jacket, hat and yes, even sun protection could all be need in the space of your short visit.

You can no longer hike to the Lighthouse du to a rather substantial landslide which destroyed the path. The hike you can take offers some incredible views. Even though we were there in May, we did not see any Puffins up close. The noise from the group we were with and their inability to simply stay back and be quiet had more to do with that than the absence of Puffins. They are very shy and easily scared off.

You will see people complaining about this fee, but as with other things in the Faroe Islands this is actually pretty reasonable as the island has a very short season and we are in fact entering a very delicate and private environment."

Kaz Bar

"It’s a great place with amazing views. At the moment there is only one hiking route that you can follow. It’s not possible to go to the lighthouse. I personally think it’s a bit too expensive since you have to pay for the boat trip + hiking fee. If you take one of the “extra boat trips” during high season, you will end up spending 590kr just to get there and walk around. However, I still think is worth it since you have made it all the way to the Faroe Islands. Given only one route was possible I felt I had to stay there for “a bit too long” (9-3pm). There is however a nice coffee shop we’re you can relaxed."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Puffins of Mykines

Mykines is renowned as one of the best places in the Faroe Islands to observe puffins, particularly during the summer months from May to August. These charismatic seabirds, with their distinctive colorful beaks, nest in burrows on the island's grassy slopes and cliffs. Visitors can witness them waddling around, flying with small fish in their beaks, and interacting with each other. The sheer number of puffins, often in the thousands, creates a truly spectacular wildlife spectacle. Instagram

It's crucial to remember that puffins are wild animals and can be easily disturbed. Visitors are advised to maintain a respectful distance, avoid loud noises, and refrain from using flash photography, especially when they are close to their burrows. The designated hiking trails are designed to offer excellent viewing opportunities while minimizing disturbance to the puffin colonies. Reddit

While puffins are the main draw, Mykines is also home to other seabirds like gannets and fulmars, adding to the rich biodiversity of the island. The experience of seeing these birds in their natural, unspoiled environment is a highlight for many visitors to the Faroe Islands. Reddit

Hiking and Landscape

The landscape of Mykines is characterized by dramatic cliffs, windswept hills, and a rugged coastline, offering breathtaking views. The main hiking route, though currently altered due to a landslide that made the path to the lighthouse inaccessible, still provides stunning vistas. The trail is generally considered easy to moderate, but the footing can be slippery, especially after rain, making sturdy hiking boots essential. Reddit

Visitors must pay a compulsory hiking fee and are accompanied by a guide. This ensures the preservation of the fragile environment and enhances the visitor experience with local knowledge. The hike allows you to immerse yourself in the raw, natural beauty of the North Atlantic, with the vast ocean stretching out before you. Reddit

Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. The Faroese climate can shift from sunny to foggy and rainy within a short period. Dressing in layers, including waterproof and windproof outer shells, is highly recommended. The dramatic weather can also add to the photographic appeal of the landscape, creating moody and atmospheric scenes. Reddit

Logistics and Planning

Getting to Mykines requires careful planning. The ferry from Sørvágur is the primary access point, operating seasonally and subject to weather cancellations. Booking ferry tickets well in advance is non-negotiable, as they are limited and highly sought after, especially during the summer months. Reddit

In addition to the ferry, a compulsory hiking fee must be paid. This fee contributes to the island's upkeep and the guided tours. While some may find the combined cost of the ferry and hiking fee to be significant, many visitors deem it worthwhile for the unique experience. Reddit

Mykines is a small, remote island with limited facilities. There's a small village and a coffee shop, but it's advisable to bring your own snacks and water. The island is car-free, and exploration is entirely on foot. The short season and the island's delicate ecosystem mean that responsible tourism practices are paramount. Reddit
