"It’s very hard to get there but it’s very worthy to visit this very old church. An old father accepted me 300 for the visit. Then he unlock the door let me in. I was shocked at that time. An 1700 years old building just was there. I am the first guy to visit this place. Seems no one came here for such a long time so that father even forgotten price of donation. What an amazing experience that after climbing for nearly 1h and then saw this great historic church even it might be forgotten for not short time."

"Well if what they say is correct, then this is one of the very oldest Christian churches still partially standing on earth. Definitely worth the hassle of getting there. Beware, Google will try to send you through the new presidential palace, go around the back."

Peter Donkin

"Just 1 hour walk from center of city. (Via German Embassy) Neglected history from 4th century. Most part of roofing has fallen and remains are seen on ground. Caretakers of the church live in the compound probably you have to call out when you arrive. If you have 4×4 , you can drive all the way to the church via Yeka Michael church. Just follow Google map or strava ."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Significance of Washa Mikael

Washa Mikael Church Ruins is a remarkable historical site in Addis Ababa, believed to be one of the oldest Christian churches in Ethiopia, with origins tracing back to the 4th century AD during the reign of the Axumite Kings Ezana and Sayzana. Reddit Its unique construction involves being carved directly out of a rock face, a technique that foreshadows the more famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. The site's significance lies not only in its age but also as a testament to early Ethiopian Christianity and architectural ingenuity. Sadly, historical accounts suggest the church was damaged by bombings during the Italian occupation, contributing to its current state of ruin. Reddit

Despite its historical importance, Washa Mikael remains relatively undiscovered and less commercialized compared to other Ethiopian heritage sites. This offers visitors a more intimate and authentic experience. The remnants of its fallen roofing and structures scattered on the ground tell a story of time and resilience. Reddit It provides a tangible connection to Ethiopia's rich past and a fascinating glimpse into the architectural styles that would later define sites like Lalibela. TikTok

Navigating the Journey to Washa Mikael

The journey to Washa Mikael Church Ruins is often described as an adventure in itself. While some reviews mention it's only about an hour's walk from the city center, many travelers find driving to be a more practical option, especially if they have a 4x4 vehicle. Reddit The roads leading to the church can be unpaved and challenging, and there's a distinct lack of official road signs, making GPS navigation essential. Travelers have noted that Google Maps might attempt to route them through restricted areas, such as the new presidential palace, so it's crucial to be aware of your surroundings and potentially take alternative routes. Reddit

For those driving, a specific route is often recommended: from the British Embassy towards Megenagna, take the uphill asphalt road on the left. Continue uphill until you pass a burial ground on your left, then take the first turn off to the left. Drive for approximately 3 kilometers, and the church will be on your left, often marked by a corrugated iron fence painted in Ethiopian colors.
