Visitors consistently praise Viru Gate for its picturesque medieval charm and its role as a fairy-tale entrance to Tallinn's Old Town. The vibrant flower market adds a delightful splash of color and warmth, making it a highly photogenic and welcoming landmark. "Viru Gate is one of the most picturesque and iconic entry points into Tallinn’s Old Town, and it was truly a highlight of our day in the city. We were instantly struck by its fairy-tale charm — the two stone towers with their red conical roofs look like something straight out of a storybook. It’s no wonder this spot is one of the most photographed places in Tallinn.
But what made it even more special for us was the row of charming flower shops lined up along the gate. It’s a very low row of stalls, almost tucked under the towers, and it absolutely brought a smile to our faces. The colorful arrangements, fresh scents, and friendly vendors made the whole area feel alive and welcoming. It added such a lovely touch of character and warmth to the already stunning medieval architecture.
Viru Gate is more than just a photo opportunity — it’s the perfect place to start your journey into Old Town Tallinn. From here, you step right into the cobbled streets, historic buildings, cafés, and artisan shops that make the city such a joy to explore. It also feels like a natural meeting point or starting place for walking tours, and it’s very easy to find from anywhere in the downtown area.
If you’re visiting Tallinn, don’t just snap a quick picture and walk by — take a moment to enjoy the flowers, the vibe, and the beauty of this historic gateway. It’s a magical introduction to a city full of surprises."

"An impressive medieval entryway into the lower section of Viru Street. With a beautiful flower market on one side and many interesting shops on the other, it is worth taking a moment to have a look.
The towers are free to see. You are not able to enter them.
The area around the towers is cobbled. There is little free seating in the area. Though there are lots of cafes if things get desperate."

"This was the gate to the lower city at Tallinn. However, much of the wall was damaged and only part of the city wall remained enough to be climbed and walked. The people of Tallinn have restored this portion nicely so one can enjoy the wonderful view of the city and original parts of the towers and walkways. Overall, a good experience."
