What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The House of the Blackheads is highly praised for its stunning, meticulously reconstructed architecture and its excellent acoustics, making it a top venue for classical concerts. Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the ornate interiors, though some note that seating at concerts can limit visibility from the back. Overall, it's a beautiful and culturally rich experience.
"The beautiful Renaissance building at Pikk tänav number 26 housed the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads until the 19th century. The Blackheads, so called because the symbol of their patron saint, Saint Mauritius, was a Moorish (=black) head, were a brotherhood of local unmarried male merchants, ship-owners, and foreigners. The building was purchased by the Blackheads in 1517 and renovated in 1597 by the Dutch architect Arent Passer in the Dutch Renaissance style. The House of the Blackheads in Tallinn was visited by several Russian tsarns, such as Peter the Great, Paul I and Alexander I. One of the most striking features of the building is the magnificently decorated doorway. A real gem!"

"Great to be at the antique White Hall of the House of the Brotherhood of Black Heads, listening to refined Baroque chamber music in the pleasant company of friends when it's -18°C outside! The interior is well restored, with superior acoustics. The overall atmosphere is unique, adorned with intricate ornaments that enhance the hall's charm. The musical ensemble includes a clavichord, violins, cello, contrabass, and Baroque flute, skillfully played by talented musicians."

"I recently attended a concert at this venue and overall had a pleasant experience. The space feels cozy and intimate, making it a great spot for live music. However, if you’re seated towards the back, watching the performance can be a bit challenging. The sightlines are not the best, as the seating is all at the same level, making it hard to see over people in front
A simple improvement would be to have better seating arrangements. Perhaps introducing high chairs or a tiered seating system, where the seats gradually elevate from front to back, would make a huge difference in visibility. This would allow everyone to have a clear view, no matter where they’re seated.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting, but with a few adjustments to seating, it could easily enhance the overall experience for all attendees"

Architectural Reconstruction and Style
Visitors often remark on how 'new' the building appears, a common observation given its recent reconstruction. However, this reconstruction allows for a vivid appreciation of the original design and the craftsmanship of the era. The building's facade is a fascinating blend of historical elements, with statues and decorative features added over time, reflecting popular tastes and architectural trends of different periods.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the building's history is tied to the Brotherhood of Blackheads, a guild of unmarried male merchants, ship-owners, and foreigners who used it as their headquarters. The brotherhood's symbol, a blackamoor's head, gave the building its name. Its historical importance is further underscored by visits from notable figures like Russian tsars Peter the Great and Alexander I.
Concert Experience and Acoustics
Performances typically feature ensembles with instruments such as the clavichord, violins, cello, contrabass, and Baroque flute, played by talented musicians. The combination of the beautiful, ornate interior and the high-fidelity sound creates a unique and memorable atmosphere. The space is often described as warm, inviting, and cozy, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the musical performance.
However, a recurring point of feedback concerns the seating arrangements. While the atmosphere is praised, some attendees seated towards the back have noted challenges with visibility. The seating is described as being on the same level, which can make it difficult to see over the person in front. Suggestions for improvement include tiered seating or higher chairs to ensure clear sightlines for all patrons, thereby enhancing the overall concert experience.
