Reviews Summary

Visitors find Kreenholm Manufactory a fascinating and historically significant site, marveling at its immense industrial architecture and dramatic riverfront location. The guided tours are praised for their informative content, offering a deep dive into the factory's past. However, some visitors express a desire for more interior access to fully appreciate the scale of the former textile giant.

"Very interesting and beautiful place, I went there with a tour in Estonian language on a Friday at 17.30 because I couldn’t make it on a Sunday (in English). At the end of the tour we also went inside to see a bit of the factory, and there was a cool light art installation. Most touring was done outside looking at the vast factory complex from different places."

"The Kreenholm Manufacturing Company was a textile manufacturing company located along the banks of the Narva River and on the river island of Kreenholm in the city of Narva. Ludwig Knoop, a cotton merchant from Bremen, Germany, founded the factory in 1857, and at one point, the company's cotton spinning and manufacturing mills were the largest in the world. The Kreenholm Company was considered the most important textile factory in Tsarist Russia, owning 12,950 hectares of land, employing 12,000 people, and manufacturing 17,500 tons of yarn and 75 million meters of fabric annually. By the time the company went bankrupt in 2010, such figures were long gone. Kreenholm Manufacturing Company made a fresh start, but the Swedish parent company announced in 2012 that the previous production level would never be reached again. For the time being, the enormous factory buildings remain a fascinating industrial heritage (which unfortunately can hardly be visited)."

"Kreenholm was a massive textile industry that operated in 1857-2010. From April until October there are guided tours (1.5 hours, 10€ adults). Unfortunately it's mostly outside, so you won't see the production rooms, offices etc (maybe you'll be luckier than me). However, it was still impressive to see how this place may have looked like over 100 years ago. Kreemholm even won Grand Prix in the 1900 Paris Exposition."

The Rise and Fall of a Textile Giant

Founded in 1857 by Ludwig Knoop, the Kreenholm Manufactory rapidly grew to become the largest textile factory in Tsarist Russia and one of the largest in the world.
