Reviews Summary

Visitors highly recommend Eski-Kermen for its historical significance, unique cave dwellings, and stunning panoramic views. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into Byzantine and medieval life. While generally safe in dry weather, caution is advised on slippery paths and near cliffs, especially for families with children. The entrance fee is reasonable for the experience.

"Highly recommend visiting and spending the whole day!"

"Eski-Kermen translates as Old Fortress. This is what the ruins of the ancient city were called in the 18th century. And its real name has been erased by centuries and no one remembers it anymore. It was built by the Byzantines in the 6th century as an outpost to protect Chersonesos. 30-meter cliffs and strong walls were a reliable defense. Of course, two-story houses have not survived. And the artificial caves in the mountain were outbuildings, a prison, warehouses. In one of the caves there was a temple and even the remains of frescoes have been preserved - three horsemen. In the 8th century, the city was destroyed by the Khazars, but managed to recover. And in the 13th century it was completely destroyed by the Tatar horde. A very interesting, unusual and beautiful place! Beautiful views of the valleys! Mysterious caves ... A dangerous siege well, from which water was collected for centuries. Now the water source is destroyed, you can go down the well into the valley, but it is dangerous! The cave city is part of the Bakhchisarai Reserve and the entrance is paid - 300 rubles per adult, children under 15 are free. The climb is not very difficult, but shoes should be comfortable. Take caps, water and a snack, as you can walk around the city for a long time."

"A picturesque historical site. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and forest, especially through the windows of the cave chambers. It's fun to climb through the levels, crawling from one chamber to the next. There are plenty of scenic angles for beautiful photos. For the lazy, a car ride to the top is offered, but it's better to hike on your own—it's more interesting."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Eski-Kermen

Eski-Kermen, meaning 'Old Fortress,' is a fascinating cave city with a rich history dating back to the 6th century. It was established by the Byzantines as a strategic outpost to defend the nearby city of Chersonesos. The city's natural defenses were enhanced by 30-meter cliffs and robust walls, making it a formidable stronghold. The artificial caves carved into the mountain served various purposes, including residences, outbuildings, prisons, and storage facilities. Notably, one cave housed a temple where remnants of ancient frescoes, including depictions of three horsemen, have been preserved. Reddit

The city faced significant challenges throughout its existence. In the 8th century, it was destroyed by the Khazars but managed to recover and thrive. However, its final destruction came in the 13th century at the hands of the Tatar horde, leading to its eventual abandonment. Despite the centuries of neglect, the ruins offer a compelling glimpse into the lives of its inhabitants and the strategic importance of the region. Reddit

Today, Eski-Kermen is a protected historical site within the Bakhchisarai Reserve. Its well-preserved structures and the dramatic landscape continue to draw visitors interested in history, archaeology, and natural beauty. The site's resilience through various historical periods makes it a significant testament to human endurance and adaptation. Reddit

Exploring the Cave City

Exploring Eski-Kermen is an adventure in itself. Visitors can wander through numerous artificial caves, many of which were once homes, workshops, or storage areas. The layout of the city, carved directly into the rock, is intricate and offers a unique perspective on ancient urban planning. You can climb from one level to another, crawling through passages and discovering hidden chambers. Reddit

One of the most intriguing features is the temple cave, where you can still see the faint outlines of frescoes, a rare surviving example of Byzantine art in the region. The 'siege well' is another point of interest, a testament to the city's defensive strategies. While the water source is now destroyed, the well itself is a significant historical artifact. Reddit

Be prepared for uneven terrain and some climbing. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is essential, as the paths can be rocky and, in wet conditions, slippery. The views from the top of the cliffs are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding valleys and mountains, making the exploration rewarding. InstagramReddit

Photography Opportunities

Eski-Kermen is a photographer's dream, offering a wealth of unique visual opportunities. The interplay of light and shadow within the carved caves creates dramatic and atmospheric shots. The windows of the cave chambers provide natural frames for capturing the stunning landscapes outside, offering picturesque angles that are hard to replicate. Reddit

The textures of the ancient rock, the remnants of frescoes, and the sheer scale of the man-made caverns all contribute to compelling photographic subjects. Early morning or late afternoon light can enhance the mood and highlight the details of the site. Consider capturing the vastness of the valley views from the cliff tops for breathtaking panoramic shots. Reddit

While photography is generally permitted, it's important to be respectful of the historical significance of the site. Avoid using flash directly on any remaining frescoes, as this can cause damage. Drone photography might be possible, but always check local regulations and obtain necessary permissions beforehand. TikTokInstagram
