The monument was originally built for Khedive Ismail by the Italian community of Alexandria to commemorate his role in developing the city and caring for their community.
After the change of regime in 1953, the monument was changed to commemorate the fallen naval soldiers of Egypt.
The statue of Khedive Ismail, which stood in the middle of the monument, was transferred to the museum of arts and then next to the Roman amphitheater and ruins where it’s still standing today."
