What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Luxor Souq to be a pleasant and manageable market, cleaner and less pushy than some other Egyptian souqs. While it offers standard tourist items, there are opportunities to find unique gems, especially if you're willing to haggle. The evening atmosphere is often praised for being more relaxed.
"Nice market, much smaller than Cairo, but cleaner and has a better feel to it. People try to sell you their products but are not overly pushy. We went about 2 or 3 pm and it was quiet which was Nice."

"Decent Market. Standard touristy items. Can randomly pick up a few gems. Not really that much hassling and people were quite friendly. You do get approached but not overly pushy
Make sure to ALWAYS haggle! Cash is King 👑"

"Alleys of wares for sale - buyer beware. This is truly a negotiation for everything and with time and persistence you will pay half of what the original offer was when you began. Or less..... be willing to walk away because they will follow and offer a significant discount and if they don't, someone else will be selling the identical thing a few shops down. It's fun to walk down the aisles and see the shops but be firm with the Just Looking - not interested - No - I said NO..... go in the evening when folks seem more relaxed. Some things (shawls for example) are offered at good prices. Make sure they are not the ones from China - if they don't have a label sewn on saying Made in Egypt you can almost guess they are made in China. Several shops in the area are markets selling goods made locally for artists as a collective. Prices at those shops are fixed and far more reasonable."

Navigating the Souq Experience
Haggling is an integral part of the shopping process here. Sellers often set prices significantly higher than their final offer, so be prepared to negotiate. A common strategy is to start at around 50% of the asking price and work your way up. Remember, it's a negotiation, not a confrontation. If a price isn't right, politely decline and be willing to walk away; you might find the same item elsewhere or get a better offer from the same vendor later.
For a more relaxed shopping trip, consider visiting during the late afternoon or evening. The crowds tend to thin out, and the heat of the day subsides, making for a more pleasant browsing experience. Keep an eye out for shops with fixed prices, as these offer a straightforward alternative to haggling and can be found in various parts of the souq.
Finding Authentic Treasures
For those seeking a more curated selection or a guaranteed fair price, seek out artist collectives or shops with fixed pricing. These establishments often support local artisans directly and offer a transparent purchasing process. While the thrill of haggling is part of the souq experience for many, these fixed-price stores provide a welcome alternative for those who prefer a no-pressure environment.
High-end jewelry and watches are also available, with some shops featuring exclusive VIP rooms for discerning collectors. These areas often showcase more luxurious and expensive pieces, catering to a specific clientele looking for unique timepieces or precious gems.
