Reviews Summary

The Luxor Public Ferry is a budget-friendly and scenic way to cross the Nile, offering great views and access to key attractions. While the ride itself is pleasant and frequent, be prepared for fluctuating prices for tourists and potential scam attempts near the docks. Confirming fares and being assertive are key to a smooth experience. Reddit

"2025/05
Ticket price is 20EGP for one way. No discount for roubd trip.

The place is crossing to the Luxar Museum. Go down stair and walk to the ferry.

The returning site on the west bank is where get off the ferry."

"They charge extra money to foreigners, this is theft, ask people about the price first and stick to the people's price,But it's a beautiful round trip, beautiful."

Assem Khaled Noby

"As others have said, walk up to the small hut next to the boat ramp and just hand them 20 Egyptian pounds as if you’re a local and they will wave you through. In my many rides they never actually gave me a ticket, just told me to go on. There ferry is easy and doesn’t take long, maybe 10 minutes across the river or something like that, running diagonally up the river just a bit (south-ward). Overall the ferry service is nice and I was glad to have it.

Horse carriages and taxis from the ferry point to Luxor temple, Karnak temple, or anywhere nearby should cost no more than 50 Egyptian pounds. They will try to charge you much, much more, of course but I found 50 pounds to be reasonable.

Note: if going from the area around Thebes Restaurant on West Bank to Luxor Temple area, you can pay a private boat to take you straight across the river (much more quickly!) for 100 pounds, saving yourself the walk to the ferry, the 20 pound ferry, 50 pound horse carriage ride, and the almost guaranteed harassment by horse carriage driver for a 150 pound tip. Watch out for scammers all around every dock."

Navigating Luxor's Nile Crossings: Ferry vs. Private Boats

The Luxor Public Ferry is the most economical way to traverse the Nile, connecting the West and East Banks. It's a communal experience, often bustling with locals and tourists alike. While the ride is short, the value is immense for budget travelers. Be prepared for potential price discrepancies for foreigners and the need to confirm fares. InstagramReddit

For those seeking speed or a more private experience, private boats and steamers are available. These can be significantly more expensive, with prices for a private boat potentially reaching 100 EGP or more. While they offer direct routes and can save time, they come at a premium. Some travelers opt for a private boat as a farewell experience or when time is of the essence. InstagramReddit

When choosing, consider your budget, time constraints, and desired experience. The public ferry offers a glimpse into daily life and stunning views at a fraction of the cost, while private options provide convenience and speed. Instagram+1

Understanding Ferry Fares and Avoiding Scams

A common point of discussion among travelers is the pricing of the Luxor Public Ferry, particularly for foreigners. While locals pay a nominal fee (around 2.5-3 EGP), tourists are often quoted prices starting at 20 EGP or more for a one-way trip. Reddit This price difference can be frustrating, and some reviews mention aggressive behavior when tourists question the fare. Reddit

Travelers suggest a strategy of paying the price as if you were a local (around 20 EGP) without necessarily receiving a formal ticket. Reddit It's crucial to confirm the price before boarding and be prepared to negotiate politely but firmly. Some visitors have successfully bargained down prices or found that paying a slightly higher, agreed-upon amount ensures a smoother passage. Reddit

Beyond the ferry, be aware of potential scams with taxis and horse carriages near the docks. Always agree on a price beforehand, and be skeptical of drivers who try to overcharge. A reasonable price for a taxi or carriage to major sites like Luxor Temple is often around 50 EGP. Reddit Being informed and assertive is key to a hassle-free experience.
