What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Mercado 9 de Octubre for its vibrant atmosphere, fresh produce, and incredibly affordable, delicious food, especially the renowned roasted pork. While some note strong smells in the meat section, most find the market clean, organized, and a delightful immersion into local Cuenca culture.
"A global traveler’s delightful walk through and produce shopping in a wet market. As I always do, a visit to an open public market is a pleasure to gain appreciation of local culture and norms.
This is probably the most organized market in Cuenca. The Mercado has a huge open plaza that it shares with a hotel.
The market itself is not only the one inside a big while pavilion but also vendors on streets along the plaza….This illustrates the entrepreneurial spirit of Cuencanos 😎😎😎😎😎.
The array of produce inside and outside of the market pavilion displays an amazing spectrum of colors that are most pleasing to see😎😎😎.
The market pavilion is clean and orderly 👏👏👏
- fruits and produce on the main level
- meats and fish on the lower level, and
- a food court on the upper level.
It’s truly a one-stop shopping for farm products.—
Great place to practice one’s price-bargaining skills 😊."

"Excellent fruit and veggie prices. Came midweek so not as many vendors. Meat section did not seem appealing. Strong smells."

"This market is big enough to bring you amazement but small enough to not take all day. It really is just a spot to but food too cook or on the 3rd floor to eat.
I can say if you eat Pig go to the 3rd floor and have some of the roasted pig. It is the best I have ever had. I even tried it in other spots around Ecuador and this place just has it down right.
Of course food by American standard is inexpensive and it seems to be just about the right price for the area.
I have read people calling it dirty. I don't agree at all . The place is old so some stuff is worn out but nothing was dirty and even the meat market didn't smell bad. That is definitely not the case everywhere."
