What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Laguna Bavaro to be a peaceful natural refuge with accessible trails and a pier offering great wildlife viewing, despite some areas being overgrown and the visitor center abandoned. It's recommended for its serene atmosphere and endemic species, though not for those seeking developed amenities.
"My wife and I did some birding here. The center is abandoned and one of the kayaking piers are completely inaccessible with a lot of overgrowth. However, some one continues to maintain the trails. We went there to do some birding and found the trails accessible. One of the piers is still accessible and there was a great view to the lake and many birds. No one else was there. I still recommend a trip there but wouldn't travel there alone."

"Laguna with some endemic species and wildlife. Used to be a paid reserve where you could take kayak and see some wildlife around Laguna.
Now it's abandoned but you can still see the molo and laguna itself. There's no reason not to see it if you're staying in Cabeza del Toro as this is pretty much only thing to see around.
The path to molo is clearly visible but not maintained so firm shoes are probably better choice than flip flops. On the other side you won't stay longer than 30 minutes and molo is some 300 meters from the road."

"Fun. Fun. Fun... Try the ziplined but be aware that one line is not a zip. It is a rope walk above the tree line. OMG!!¡"

Exploring the Natural Beauty
It's important to manage expectations before visiting. This is not a manicured park but a wild refuge. The overgrowth means that activities like kayaking might be limited, but the visual rewards from the accessible points are significant. The serene atmosphere and the chance to observe nature undisturbed are the main draws.
For those interested in birdwatching or simply enjoying a quiet natural escape, Laguna Bavaro is a worthwhile stop, especially if you are staying nearby in Cabeza del Toro. The experience is about appreciating the raw beauty of the Dominican Republic's natural landscape.
Practicalities for Your Visit
Safety and companionship are also considerations. Due to the refuge's remote nature and the lack of extensive facilities, it's advisable to visit with at least one other person. This ensures a more secure and enjoyable experience. The typical visit duration is relatively short, often around 30 minutes to an hour, as the focus is on a brief immersion in nature rather than extensive activities.
Photography enthusiasts will find the accessible pier a prime spot for capturing the lagoon's beauty and its inhabitants. The early morning hours are particularly good for spotting wildlife and enjoying the best light for photos.
