Julian Rembelski

"If you love modern art, this is the place for you. Plus it sits in a beautiful surrounding, with walks around the lakes and by the sea. A lovely cafe is just a few hundred yards away with pizza, beer, ice cream and other refreshments. Spend an extra hour exploring the nature walks if weather permits. You may even be lucky enough to spot a troll on your walk!"

Janine Czar

"The museum has some special exhibitions, and little by little visitors emerge into the artistic world. I enjoy the welcoming and warm of the staff members, and how kind they communicate with the customers but also between each others transmitting a nice feeling of a community. For some video projections more seats are needed as there was no space for everyone. The location is simply beautiful. Other than that, there is a big parking place also used by those going to the strand and not visiting the museum, and a small bycicle space."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Architecture of ARKEN

ARKEN Museum of Modern Art is as much an architectural statement as it is a repository for art. Designed by Søren Robert Lund and opened in 1996, its deconstructivist style is immediately striking. The building's distinctive shape, with its sharp angles and dramatic curves, is designed to evoke a ship or a stranded whale, fitting its coastal location. A key feature is how the museum appears to 'float' on a shallow pool of water, particularly during high tide, creating a magical and surreal effect. Instagram This unique design not only houses the art but also becomes an integral part of the visitor experience, blurring the lines between the built environment and the natural landscape.

Later expansions have added to the museum's footprint, including a significant new wing that further enhances its capacity for exhibitions and visitor engagement. The interior spaces are designed to be flexible and adaptable, accommodating a wide range of contemporary art forms, from large-scale installations to intimate displays. The contrast between the bold exterior and the often minimalist, white-cube gallery spaces inside allows the art to take center stage, while still offering moments of architectural wonder. Reddit

Visitors often comment on the building's unique atmosphere, noting how the architecture itself contributes to the overall feeling of discovery and inspiration. It’s a space that encourages contemplation, not just of the art, but of the very act of experiencing art in a specially designed environment. The integration of the surrounding landscape, with its views of the sea and dunes, further enriches the architectural narrative of ARKEN. Reddit

Exploring Contemporary Art at ARKEN

ARKEN is dedicated to showcasing contemporary art from Denmark and beyond, making it a vital hub for modern art enthusiasts. The museum's permanent collection features significant works by Danish artists such as Olafur Eliasson and Per Kirkeby, alongside international stars like Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst. InstagramReddit The collection is constantly evolving, reflecting the dynamic nature of contemporary art and its engagement with current societal themes.

The museum is particularly known for its thought-provoking exhibitions, which often explore complex issues through diverse artistic mediums. From immersive digital art experiences like 'Nature Dreams' to challenging conceptual pieces, ARKEN aims to provoke dialogue and offer new perspectives. Instagram Visitors often praise the museum for its ability to present art in engaging and accessible ways, making it a rewarding experience even for those new to contemporary art. The use of AR (Augmented Reality) technologies in some displays further enhances the interactive nature of the art. Instagram

Beyond the main exhibitions, ARKEN also fosters creative freedom by allowing visitors to contribute their own art, as seen with watercolor paintings being displayed. Instagram This inclusive approach underscores ARKEN's mission to make art a living, breathing part of the community. The museum's location, slightly removed from the city bustle, also contributes to a more focused and contemplative art experience, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in the artistic world. Reddit

ARKEN's Unique Coastal Location

One of ARKEN Museum's most distinctive features is its stunning coastal location in Ishøj, just a short journey from Copenhagen. Situated on the edge of a beach, the museum offers breathtaking views of the Øresund strait. This unique setting is not just a backdrop; it's an integral part of the ARKEN experience, with the architecture designed to interact with the sea and sky. Instagram

During high tide, the museum's design creates the illusion that it is floating on water, a truly magical sight that captivates visitors. Instagram The surrounding landscape provides opportunities for leisurely walks along the coast, allowing visitors to connect with nature and enjoy the serene atmosphere. This proximity to the sea adds a layer of tranquility and inspiration to the visit, complementing the modern art within.

Visitors often highlight the beautiful surroundings as a significant draw, encouraging them to spend extra time exploring the natural environment. Reddit Whether it's a brisk walk by the sea or simply enjoying the view from the museum's windows, the coastal setting enhances the overall sense of escape and discovery that ARKEN offers. It's a place where art and nature converge beautifully.
