Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise The Lakes for their beauty and tranquility, calling them a must-see feature of Copenhagen. The scenic walking paths, abundant birdlife, and relaxed atmosphere make it a perfect spot for both locals and tourists to unwind and enjoy the city's charm. Some find the area can get busy on warm days, but the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive.

"A visit to Copenhagen should include a Walk along the lakes. They are one reason Copenhagen is beautiful city. On a sunny day it’s full of couples kissing on the benches, joggers and parents with baby pram.
The Lakes (Danish: Søerne) in Copenhagen, Denmark is a row of three rectangular lakes curving around the western margin of the City Centre, forming one of the oldest and most distinctive features of the city's topography. Originally the area, which the lakes now form, was one long stream. It had an arch shape and was just outside the city levees. In the early Middle Ages, a need of water for watermills was determined. As a result of this a dam was built and the Peblinge Sø was created.
As a result of a siege of Copenhagen in 1523, it was decided to expand the entrenchments in order to improve the fortifications of the city. The levee at Peblinge Sø was expanded and another was created, which resulted in the creation of Sortedams Sø. In the beginning of the 16th century, Sankt Jørgens Sø was created, by further damming. This made it possible to flood the banks and lakes in case of an attack."

Jorgen Frohlich

"The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and the walking trails were well-maintained and provided a peaceful atmosphere for a leisurely stroll.
There were plenty of benches to sit and soak in the views.

For tourists, it's a place where you just catch a beauty of sight and relax yourself for a few minutes.
And for a resident, just burn you calories with cinematic view."

Mona Lisha

"This is the place where Copenhageners spend their office breaks and free time. Activities include running, chatting, cycling, and strolling with a 47 Kroner To-Go-Coffee while showing off their latest outfit.
However, The Lakes is also a bird sanctuary. In March 2023, I observed Tufted Ducks, Great Crested Crapes, Herring Gulls, A colony of breeding Cormorants (on the tiny island) Common Moorhens, a Red-crested Pochard, Wigeons, Mute Swans, Gadwalls, Mallards, Blach-headed Gulls, Greylag Geese, and Coots."

The History and Evolution of The Lakes

The Lakes, known in Danish as 'Søerne', are a series of three rectangular artificial lakes that form a distinctive feature of Copenhagen's western city center. Their origins trace back to the Middle Ages, initially as a stream that was dammed to power watermills. The current configuration evolved significantly in the 16th century when fortifications were expanded, leading to the creation of Peblinge Sø, Sortedams Sø, and Sankt Jørgens Sø. These lakes served a dual purpose: providing water for mills and acting as a defensive moat, capable of flooding the surrounding banks in case of attack. Reddit

Over centuries, The Lakes transformed from a defensive barrier into a beloved recreational space. The walking paths were developed, and the area became a popular spot for Copenhageners to relax, exercise, and socialize. Today, they are a vibrant hub for joggers, cyclists, couples, and families, offering a peaceful respite from the urban bustle. The diverse birdlife, including ducks, swans, and gulls, adds to the natural charm of this historic urban landscape. Reddit

Reddit Grabbing a 'To-Go-Coffee' and finding a bench to people-watch is another quintessential local activity. Reddit
