What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Vltava River rafting in Cesky Krumlov is a scenic and enjoyable experience, particularly the guided barge tours which offer historical insights. While the river itself is beautiful and the guides are often praised for their professionalism, visitors should be prepared for strict cash-only payment policies and potentially unfavorable exchange rates for Euros. Booking in advance is crucial for self-paddle options.
"This was a a really fun thing to do while in Cesky Krumlov. I recommend booking a few days early online if you are wanting a Kayak to paddle yourself, as they were all reserved already they the day we wanted to try it. But they also had plenty of availability on the guided little barges. That turned out to be really fun anyway, since we were the only English speaking couple on board, we got to sit in the very back where the English speaking guide essentially gave us a private tour and explained a lot of history.
When you are finished, its a short walk to Lahvárna, for the best beer I had in Cesky Krumlov."

"Looks nice however payment is cash only they tell you this only at the end before payment after you made up your mind otherwise most people with credit cards would not go for it"

"Although the ride itself went smoothly, we mostly had issues with reception. Firstly, their policies are very strict regarding deposits. As we were unable to be contacted, our deposit (for 2 pm ride) was taken with no chance of rescheduling. Secondly, after losing the deposit, we were willing to buy a ticket for the next scheduled trip ie 4 pm and was told there was only one seat left. I was happy to buy a seat for my daughter, but was told that they had overbooked and instead had put three other people in place. So we had no choice but take the later session ie 6 pm and the weather turned on us… wet, cold and rainy This later session is 100 korunas more! reception quoted 2 tickets in korunas and when I was just about to pay, she was quick to say that the eftpos machine is down and only accepts cash payment in euros! ( 1 euro to 22 korunas) , in the end I paid 11 euros more than the price in Czech koruna. To be honest, it was not worth it. Just walk away! They could not care less as we are just another tourist because they know they can pick the business from another tourist. Quite ruthless in my opinion. I have done the castle tour and walked along the river a few times and did a street tour, that is plenty because the historical boat tour is regurgitating the same stuff and extremely brief.
However, the boys who organised the boats and did the rafting for us were amazing and professional."

Navigating the Vltava: Self-Paddle vs. Guided Tours
Regardless of your choice, the Vltava River in Cesky Krumlov offers a gentle and scenic route. The currents are typically mild, making it a safe and enjoyable experience for beginners. The primary focus is on the picturesque views of the UNESCO-listed old town and the majestic castle complex.
Key takeaway: If you crave control and a bit of a workout, book a kayak early. If you prefer a leisurely, guided experience with historical context, opt for a barge tour. Both offer fantastic perspectives of this charming Czech town.
The Cash Conundrum: Payment on the Vltava
Visitors have reported being told about the cash-only policy only at the last minute, leading to frustration. Furthermore, if you attempt to pay in Euros, the exchange rate offered can be significantly unfavorable, costing you more than the equivalent in CZK. This practice has led some to feel it's a way for operators to capitalize on tourists.
Pro Tip: To avoid this hassle, ensure you have ample Czech Koruna on hand before you arrive for your rafting trip. Many riverside bars and restaurants also prefer cash, so having a good supply will make your entire experience smoother and potentially save you money.
Vltava Rafting for Families and Beginners
Even for self-guided options like kayaks, the Vltava is forgiving. The route is well-defined, and the water is generally shallow enough in most areas. It’s more of a scenic float than an adrenaline-pumping adventure, which is perfect for a leisurely exploration of the town.
Family-friendly tip: Pack snacks and drinks (if allowed by the operator) to keep younger ones happy. Also, consider the timing of your trip; weekday afternoons tend to be less crowded, offering a more peaceful experience for everyone.
