What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the immersive medieval atmosphere and the lively, interactive show, calling it a unique Prague experience. The hearty, traditional food and generous portions are frequently praised, though some note the novelty of eating with hands. While the historical accuracy might be debated, the overall fun and entertainment value make it a highly recommended evening out.
"What a fantastic find! Located near to Prague Castle, the tavern dates back to 1375, and little seems to have changed! (I wasn't there when it opened, so I can't confirm this fact!) Its dark, with wooden benches and candles. Don't expect a romantic meal though, you may end up sharing a bench with strangers, but it can be an opportunity to make new friends! The food and drink is all served in the traditional way, by staff in traditional clothing. When asked what beers they had, the response was 'Light or Dark!' 🤣 The food was amazing, the grilled chicken was a large piece of chicken with boiled potatoes and corn on the cob on top of a bacon gravy. Don't exepct any cutlery, as I have said, its all served traditionally, so no knives and forks, you eat with your hands, and in my opinion, it enhanced the flavour! You get a bowl with lemon water to clean your hands after, so its all good. If you visit, (and I strongly suggest you do) make sure you investigate the labyrinth of rooms downstairs! My only regret was that we didn't see the show (you need to book tickets for the evening show) so we will be going back to see the show and appreciate the atmosphere to its full extent!"

"What a great experience. We went with friends and had such fun. They took my reservation some months in advance by email, we laid on the day of visiting.
There was beer, food, entertainment, more beer, wine, food, more entertainment and a lot of laughs.
Defo recommend it if you’re visiting. This place has truly ancient rooms and caves that keep going down and down, you need to be able bodied to deal with that."

"This medieval tavern experience was such a fun surprise. We chose the middle option, the one that includes two drinks, the full show, and everything, and honestly we loved it. The whole experience feels like you’re stepping into a medieval cave, with candles everywhere, dark cozy corners, warm lighting, and that little winter heat that makes it even more atmospheric. The show is super interactive, so it’s definitely not for shy people, but they guide you through it in a really fun way.
The food was great overall. I could have easily skipped the starters because the board was huge, with different cheeses, cold sausages and salami-style cuts, and a small salad. Good, but not the highlight. The real star is the main course. The roast chicken with barbecue ribs was amazing. The potatoes and corn were also baked and full of flavor. Everything was really tasty, but we made the rookie mistake of getting too full with the starters, so we couldn’t finish the mains. The dessert was simple but nice, little spiced cakes with a touch of anise and a bit of fruit. And the dark beer here was really good too.

However, it's worth noting that the atmosphere is quite dark and can be loud, which might be overwhelming for very young children or those sensitive to sensory input. The Authentic Medieval Experience
This commitment to authenticity extends to the dining experience. Forget modern cutlery; you'll be encouraged to eat with your hands, a practice that many find enhances the rustic charm and enjoyment of the hearty, traditional Czech cuisine. Expect generous portions of grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and other hearty fare, often served with a side of historical storytelling.
Beyond the food, the medieval show is a central part of the evening. Performers engage the audience with a variety of acts, which can include juggling, sword fighting, historical reenactments, and traditional music. This interactive element ensures a lively and entertaining night, making it a memorable experience for visitors seeking something unique in Prague.
Navigating the Menu and Drinks
Starters can be substantial, featuring platters of cheeses, cured meats, and salads, which can sometimes lead to diners being too full for their main courses. Desserts are typically simpler, like spiced cakes or fruit. The emphasis is on rustic, flavorful dishes that are meant to be enjoyed communally.
Beverages play a significant role in the medieval tavern experience. Expect a selection of traditional Czech beers, both light and dark, as well as local wines. Some packages offer unlimited drinks, allowing you to fully embrace the spirit of a medieval feast. Remember to stay hydrated, especially if you're enjoying the show and the atmosphere for several hours.
Tips for a Memorable Visit
Secondly, embrace the authenticity. Eating with your hands is part of the fun, so don't be shy! The venue provides hand-washing facilities, so you can enjoy the rustic dining experience without worry. Also, be prepared for the interactive nature of the show; it's designed to be engaging and entertaining, so participate and have fun!
Finally, consider exploring the venue's ancient rooms and caves if available. Many medieval taverns in Prague boast extensive underground spaces that add to the historical mystique. If you're traveling solo, be open to sharing a table with other guests, as it can lead to interesting conversations and new friendships.
