The Curonian Spit was formed about 5,000 years ago, and to be honest, I didn’t know it existed until far too recently! Visiting this unique coastline with its eerie dead dunes, moss-verdant forests thrumming with birdsong and wild, raging Baltic seas was something so new and so wonderful to me that I already want to return! The Spit was formed by the sea, wind and human activity and continues to b...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Curonian Spit's unique natural beauty, describing it as a 'heavenly' place with stunning dunes, forests, and beaches. The well-developed bike paths and charming villages like Nida are frequently praised. However, the experience can be marred by significant ferry wait times and additional costs for park entry and attractions, leading some to feel it's not worth the expense.

"This is how I imagine heaven!
Ideal place for a biking trip, as there are high-quality bike roads, plenty of cafes and restaurants, and many nice places to stop all along the peninsula. We took a ferry, then a trip by bus from Smiltyne to Nida, where we rented a bike and rode to Juodkrante (approx. 30 km). Visited Vecerkrugas dune, Preila, did some bird watching near Karvaiciai, then a short walk in Pervalka, a hike to Dead Dunes, spent some time at a beach near Juodkrante, and had a great dinner and a walk around Juodkrante, back to Smiltyne by bus, then ferry back to Klaipeda. Wonderful, relaxing experience!"

"Between Cranz (Russia) and Smiltynė (Lithuania) stretches over 98 km one of the most special nature reserves in Europe: the Curonian Spit. A spit is a long sand spit that (partially) blocks off a part of the sea, in this case the Curonian Lagoon is blocked off from the Baltic Sea. The Curonian Spit was formed in the 5th millennium BC, the narrow sand spit, the width varies from 380m to 3800 m, is mainly covered with pine trees. The area is a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer months, attractions include the artists' village of Nida, the Witches' Hill in Juodkrantė and the two dune areas. In order to protect nature, the Curonian Spit National Park was established in 1991. In 2000, the entire spit became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and rightly so, because the Curonian Spit is definitely worth a trip!"

"46€ for the ferry
50€ entrance fee to the national park
5€/person for the dead dunes as the main attraction and only a tiny carpark
Pretty bad roads
All this makes the experience of this beautiful piece of earth pretty sour and not worth it"

Reaching the Curonian Spit is an adventure in itself, primarily involving a ferry from Klaipeda to Smiltynė. This ferry service is crucial for accessing the peninsula, but it's also a common point of frustration for visitors due to significant wait times, particularly during the summer months. Travelers have reported waiting for hours in their cars, turning a simple trip into a logistical challenge. Reddit It's highly recommended to either arrive extremely early in the morning or consider alternative transport options if available, though car access is often preferred for exploring the spit's length. Reddit This allows you to stop at scenic viewpoints, charming villages, and smaller attractions that might be missed by bus. Remember to factor in the national park entrance fee and potential charges for specific sites when planning your transport and activities. Reddit

* Consider Off-Peak: If possible, visit during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) to significantly reduce ferry wait times. Reddit

The Unique Landscapes of the Curonian Spit

Instagram These dunes are not static; they are dynamic, constantly shifting due to wind, a phenomenon that has historically led to the burial of villages, giving rise to the eerie Dead Dunes. Reddit

Beyond the sandy expanses, the spit is covered in lush pine forests, most famously the Dancing Forest. This section of woodland is characterized by its mysteriously contorted and twisted pine trees, creating a surreal and almost magical atmosphere. Instagram The contrast between the dense, vibrant green forest and the stark, golden dunes is a defining characteristic of the Curonian Spit.
