Reviews Summary

Cueva del Palmarito is a fascinating natural cave system with impressive stalagmites and a refreshing underground lake, offering a unique adventure. However, some visitors find the guide fees high and the guides themselves overly aggressive, leading to potential negative experiences. The cave's natural state means it can be slippery and dark, requiring a good flashlight for deeper exploration. Reddit

"Very interesting place; the creek flows into the mountain, and you can enter the huge cave system next to it.
You will need a good light (cell phone is NOT enough after 50 feet...), and probably a guide, or you can be stumbling wildly around for hours (still fun though)"

"A pearl in just in the heart of another pearl: Viñales national park.
250 meters of caves. The structures formed by the stalagmites are impressive and the filtered water created a small lake where you can dive in and enjoy the fresh pure water.
Highly recommended!"

"WARNING!
After politely but firmly saying “no gracias señor” to the man who grabbed my arm when I tried to enter this cave without a guide, I came out of the cave 15 minutes later to discover he had used his keys to deflate the tires in my bicycle. I had to ride my bicycle with flat tires for 1km to the nearest farm, where I found a nice man who rode his horse next to me for another 1km to a bicycle repair man.

This is a public space, and given that I cannot speak Spanish and prefer to explore places at my own pace, I was well within my right to politely decline the ‘guide’ outside. There was nobody else around, and as I entered the cave I heard him angrily shout something to me containing the word ‘bicicleta’ — I realise now this was a threat.

The cave itself is enormous. I was ok with an iPhone light, but I wish I had used a bigger torch to light up the space more effectively. Be careful as it is impressive but is slippery in places. Walk slowly and carefully. The cave is very large inside, and continues quite far back into the mountain until you get to a large pond (I believe some people swim here). In comparison, the ‘Cave of Silence’ located to the east from Cueva del Palmarito has a very narrow passage, so it is quite interesting to visit both of these ‘wild’ (unattended) caves to see the contrast. I was alone, but it’d definitely be better and safer in a group of two people or more.

If you walk to the cave and decline the guide, then no problem, but if you go by bicycle and do not want his services (I would encourage you to boycott him after this terrible encounter) then you should lock your bicycle somewhere before the cave entrance, so that the guide doesn’t see it and do the same thing to you. If you speak Spanish, please ask him about the guy who bicycle tires he deflated and see how he reacts!"

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Cueva del Palmarito can be an exciting adventure for families, offering a glimpse into a natural wonder. The underground creek and the cave lake are particularly captivating for children. However, parents should be prepared for slippery surfaces and limited visibility deeper inside, requiring constant supervision. Reddit Bringing a powerful flashlight is crucial to keep kids engaged and safe. While the cave itself is a natural attraction, consider the potential for aggressive guides if you choose not to hire one, which might be stressful with young children. Reddit

Opting for a guide might be beneficial for families, as they can help manage the children's excitement and ensure everyone stays on the designated paths. The refreshing swim in the cave lake can be a highlight, but ensure children are comfortable in darker, enclosed spaces. Reddit Overall, it's a unique experience, but requires careful planning and awareness of the cave's natural conditions.

💰 Budget Travelers

For budget-conscious travelers, Cueva del Palmarito offers a relatively inexpensive natural attraction, especially if you arrive by bicycle or on foot. TikTok The main cost concern can be the guide fees, which some find steep for the duration of the visit. Reddit If you're comfortable exploring independently and have a good flashlight, you can significantly reduce expenses. However, be aware of the potential for aggressive guides and take precautions, such as securing your bicycle away from the entrance. Reddit

Packing your own water and snacks is also a good idea, as facilities at the cave are minimal. The experience itself, marveling at the natural formations and taking a dip in the cave lake, offers great value for money if you manage the guide situation effectively. Reddit

Navigating the Cave: Safety and Exploration

Cueva del Palmarito offers a raw, natural caving experience. While the main passages are accessible, the cave system extends deeper into the mountain. Visitors are advised to bring a powerful flashlight, as phone lights are insufficient for exploring beyond the initial 50 feet. Reddit The cave floor can be slippery, especially near the water, so sturdy, non-slip footwear is essential. Reddit Traveling with at least one other person is recommended for safety, especially if you choose to explore without a guide. Reddit

Some travelers have reported negative interactions with guides who aggressively demand payment. If you prefer to explore independently, be firm in your refusal. One visitor reported their bicycle tires being deflated after declining a guide's services, leading to a difficult journey to get repairs. Reddit It's advisable to secure your bicycle well away from the cave entrance if you anticipate such issues. Reddit

The cave features impressive stalagmite formations and a serene lake where some visitors choose to swim. While the water is described as pure, it can be somewhat muddy. Reddit The experience is often contrasted with the narrower 'Cave of Silence' nearby, highlighting the diverse geological features of the Viñales region. Reddit

The Guide Dilemma: Value vs. Aggression

The presence of guides at Cueva del Palmarito is a point of contention for some visitors. While guides can enhance the experience by pointing out formations and ensuring safety, their methods can be off-putting. Reddit One common complaint is the perceived high cost (around 500 CUP per person) for what some feel is a short visit, especially if the primary interest is swimming in the cave lake. Reddit

There are reports of guides being overly persistent and even resorting to intimidation tactics if their services are refused. This has led to incidents like property damage, such as deflated bicycle tires, as a form of retaliation. Reddit Travelers who prefer to explore at their own pace or are on a tight budget may find the guide situation frustrating. It's recommended to be clear and assertive if you choose not to hire a guide, and to secure any personal belongings like bicycles beforehand. Reddit

Despite these issues, for those who do opt for a guide, they can offer valuable insights into the cave's geology and history. The decision often comes down to personal preference for exploration style and comfort level with potential negotiation or confrontation. Reddit
