Dedicated to telling the stories of the enslaved people forced to live and work here, the Whitney Plantation is one of the few truly educational tours. No weddings or mojitos. I’ve been unsure how to honor this place without glorifying it. But in a time when books are banned, history is hidden, and diversity is demonized, we must amplify the truth. We must confront the horrors of this country, and...

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Complex History of San Severino Castle

San Severino Castle, located near Matanzas, Cuba, holds a layered and significant history. Originally constructed in 1735 by enslaved Africans, its primary purpose was to defend the city of Matanzas. This origin story is crucial to understanding the site's narrative, highlighting the labor and lives of those who built it. Instagram The castle's strategic importance meant it was destroyed in 1762 to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, only to be rebuilt and later repurposed. Instagram

Over time, the castle's function evolved dramatically. It transitioned from a defensive structure to a prison, a stark reminder of Cuba's complex past. The conditions within these walls were harsh, and the site now serves as a museum dedicated to educating visitors about this period. Reddit The recent updates, including hundreds of new English and Spanish signs and revised guided tours, aim to provide a more comprehensive and respectful portrayal of its history, particularly focusing on the experiences of African descendants in Cuba. TikTokReddit

It's important to distinguish this historical narrative from political commentary. While some reviews touch upon Cuba's political history, the core experience at San Severino Castle is centered on its role in the history of slavery and its subsequent use as a penal institution. Reddit The site is a testament to the resilience and struggles of Afro-Cubans, and its transformation into an educational museum is seen by many as a long-overdue recognition of this heritage. Visiting the "Ghost Village" of San Severino di Centola

While the Cuban San Severino Castle is a prominent historical site, there's also a similarly named "ghost village" in Italy: San Severino di Centola. This medieval settlement, dating back to the 10th-11th centuries, is perched above the Mingardo river gorge and was slowly abandoned over time. Instagram+1 It offers a glimpse into a bygone era, with the ruins of a castle, a church, and a baronial mansion still standing. Instagram

The visit to San Severino di Centola is described as free, and the views from the village are considered superb. Instagram It's a preserved heritage site that attracts those interested in abandoned places and historical exploration. Instagram+1 Unlike its Cuban counterpart, which focuses on the history of slavery and its prison past, the Italian San Severino di Centola offers a different kind of historical immersion, centered on medieval life and gradual abandonment. Instagram

For travelers interested in urbex (urban exploration) or picturesque ruins, San Severino di Centola presents a compelling alternative or complementary visit. Instagram+1 The Italian site's appeal lies in its atmospheric decay and its stunning natural setting, offering a stark contrast to the more focused historical narrative of the Cuban castle.
