What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
María la Gorda offers breathtaking natural beauty, particularly for diving enthusiasts, with pristine beaches and vibrant underwater life. However, visitors should be prepared for its remote location, limited amenities, and potential issues with cleanliness and food variety. The experience can be magical if expectations are managed regarding comfort and connectivity.
"Went there mid december 2021 for a diving course. We checked beforehand if the diving center has opened after the lockdown and were reassured that the courses will be available. After a 6h drive we arrived at a beautiful scenery, where we learned, that the diving center has opened but there are no instructors. It seemed they lured us there, the staff was no help at all and laughed about it. We were the only tourists at the obviously quiet and spectacular beach, which was quite nice. (The beach was the only reason for the 2nd star in my rating.)
The rooms were a bit dirty, the towels probably not changed during the last 2 years. The food was okay, we could choose between 3 dishes. There were 2 stray dogs and 10+ cats, which will beleaguer you during your meals.
I hope it changed allready but for the price it was the biggest disappointment in Cuba and I wouldn't recommend it in this poor state."

"It's a beautiful place and great diving with lots of walls to the abyss, coral caves opening to the blue and great visibility. I recommand paying extra for the room near the sea because they are 20m from the water. Mine was the one closest to the diving center and it was perfect.
Note that the food is horrible with almost nothing vegetarian, the shop has close to nothing to offer and its time consuming and expensive to get to civilization. Also, the bugs feast on the guests (mosquitoes, flies, and I think even flees).
The hotel staff are super nice and helpful and so are the diving instructors.
Overall I absolutely loved the place."

"The Villa and beach area are beautiful and very peaceful. If you are looking to get away from all the hustle and a secluded beach area, then this is the place. The villa staff are very helpful. They also organize some very good snorkeling and scuba diving tours at a good price. I personally recommend diving here to see some wonderful corals and sea life. The water is clear and with sunlight makes for excellent views.
A day trip from Vinales makes for a good drive and an excellent day!"
