"A big concrete park just down the road from our hotel - Meliá San Carlos - and opposite the main theatre, the Parque José Martí is a nice place to relax and go for a stroll. Old men playing chess in the shade and tourists like us taking photos and listening to our respective guides talking about José Martí - a Spanish guy who is a bit of a national hero after devoting much of his life to the cause of Cuban independence.
This park, a big monument in Plaza de le Revolución and the country's main international airport, to name but a few things, are all named after him and I'm sure there are many other sites around the country named in his honour too."
