Reviews Summary
Glavni Kolodvor is recognized for its grand, historical Neo-Renaissance facade and its vital role as a central rail hub. However, many visitors are disappointed by the station's dated condition, citing issues with cleanliness, graffiti, and a lack of modern amenities. The prevalence of taxi scams at the station is a significant concern for travelers.
"its my first time here at zagreb train station and im amazae that the most shinest floor train station ive seen here in europe and its a good thing. it looks clean, its not slippery and i like it .and its a wide train station and its open air."
Emer The Wonderer
"I come from the country where trains are part of our culture. Switzerland. And of course I will compare every other place to the Swiss places.
This train station is the main station not only from the capital but also from the country. Whoever comes to visit your country by train arrives here at Glavni.
It should be possible to transform a train station into a state if the art place. This is not the old Soviet era anymore and it's not former Yugoslavia either. It's a European Union country's main station.
The smell, the damaged clocks, the damaged screens, the demolished and not repaired walls... I could count maybe a 100 things that need to be repaired and renewed. Is this what Croatia wants to show when people come to Zagreb? We live in 2025 where digitalisation is everywhere but this train station gave me the taste of 1980s.
My advice to whoever is repsonsible and has the final say, come to Zurich and see how a train station can look. See how a train station can become a place of travel-gather-shopping center."

"This is a symbolic historical building that reflects Zagreb’s past role as a key railway hub linking Eastern and Western Europe. It was built in 1892 during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, designed in Neo-Renaissance style by architect Ferenc Pfaff. Today, it serves as the central hub for domestic rail routes in Croatia, while also connecting to international train lines to Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, and beyond."

Utilizing the tram system is generally manageable with children, but be prepared for potential crowds during peak hours. Purchasing tickets from shops beforehand is recommended to avoid delays. A Glimpse into History and Architecture
Despite its historical significance, the station's current condition is a point of contention for many visitors. While the facade is impressive, internal areas have been described as tired, with pockets of graffiti and visible wear and tear. Some travelers lament the lack of modernization, comparing it unfavorably to contemporary European stations and wishing for a transformation that better reflects Croatia's status as an EU member.
However, it remains the central hub for domestic rail routes in Croatia and a key gateway for international travel. The station's enduring role in connecting people and places ensures its continued relevance, even as discussions about its renovation and modernization persist.
Navigating Public Transport and Avoiding Scams
Instead, head to the tram stop located directly in front of the station. Tickets for trams and buses can be purchased at designated shops, often found near tram stops. This method is not only more economical but also significantly safer and more reliable. Zagreb's tram system is extensive and can efficiently take you to most parts of the city.
For those with heavy luggage or who prefer a more direct route, pre-booking a ride-sharing service or a reputable taxi company in advance is a safer alternative to hailing a cab on the spot at the station. This proactive approach ensures a smoother and more transparent journey to your accommodation or next destination.
