What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the City Museum of Rijeka Sugar Palace for its comprehensive and engaging exploration of the city's rich history, from its industrial boom to its cultural evolution. The interactive exhibits and helpful staff are frequently highlighted as major positives, making it a highly recommended stop for understanding Rijeka's past. Some find the entrance fee a bit steep for Croatia, but most agree the experience is well worth the ticket price.
"This elegant museum is a great way to get to know the rich history of Rijeka. It takes you on a journey through time from its medieval trading days through its transformation into a free trade port under the Habsburgs/Hungarians (and then briefly the Italians, eventually Yugoslavia and Croatia) into a thriving entrepôt that developed into a major Adriatic ship-building centre, competing with that other fine maritime port city, Trieste. The multi-media exhibits (supported by informative texts) take you on a chronological journey, interspersed with specific historical stories (the invention and development of the torpedo being my personal favorite). The museum staff were especially helpful (thank you Sasha!) in answering questions. Well worth a visit if you want to understand the city's fascinating history and culture...and you may linger in the museum longer than you'd planned!"
