What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the absolutely stunning 360° panoramic views from St. Michael's Fortress, calling it a must-visit for its breathtaking scenery and historical ambiance. While the free entry and serene atmosphere are highly praised, some caution is advised regarding the rocky, uneven terrain and potential hazards like broken glass, emphasizing the need for sturdy footwear.
"This spot offers a truly beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and nearby islands—perfect for photos or a peaceful moment to take it all in. However, visitors should tread carefully: the terrain can be tricky, and hidden dangers like broken glass pose a risk. My son unfortunately pierced his shoe on a shard, so be sure to wear sturdy footwear and stay alert when walking."

Quick tips: while isn’t rocky making your way up there, I would recommend wearing comfortably shoes(hiking shoes or trainers or boots) as everything in the monastery and surrounding are rocky. Get yourself a bottle of water as you might want not to go back straight away because the view is simply irresistible :) and all of that for free. You pay 0€ for this, as well as interesting rocks and few sit and table alongside the path so I would recommend walking up there to enjoy the whole experience.
Just beware that you might encounter people being openly offended by the color of your skin and get a lot of eyes for simply being a tourist.
But overall Great place to enjoy a sunset and meditate if you want to. You can also see the whole city and it’s recommended for 360 view on all islands."

"Gorgeous view! We planned to visit there at sunrise. It’s really nice, but you won’t see the full sunrise because the sun rises behind the mountains (or on the island)."

Key advice for families: Ensure everyone wears sturdy, closed-toe shoes due to the rocky and uneven terrain. Pack plenty of water and snacks, as there are no amenities available. Exploring the Ancient Ruins
The fortress served as an observation post, providing crucial vantage points over the Adriatic Sea and surrounding islands. This strategic position allowed for early detection of approaching ships, making it a vital defensive structure. Today, climbing the accessible parts of the ramparts allows visitors to experience these same commanding views, offering a glimpse into why this location was chosen centuries ago.
While exploring, remember that the site is largely undeveloped. Be aware of uneven ground and potential hazards like loose stones or debris. The lack of formal paths means you're essentially exploring an archaeological site, so tread carefully and respect the historical integrity of the ruins.
The Unbeatable Panoramic Views
These vistas are particularly breathtaking during sunrise and sunset. While sunrise might mean the sun appears behind mountains, the soft morning light still offers a serene experience. Sunset, however, is often described as 'irresistible,' with the sky ablaze with color as the sun dips below the sea. This makes the fortress a popular spot for quiet contemplation and photography.
To fully appreciate the views, it's recommended to bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities on-site. The unobstructed nature of the viewpoint means you can spend a considerable amount of time soaking in the scenery without interruption.
