What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Northern Velebit National Park is lauded as one of Croatia's most beautiful, offering a more tranquil experience than its popular counterparts. Visitors rave about the engineering marvel of the Premužićeva trail and the stunning, accessible mountain scenery. While the rough access road and limited dining options are noted, the overall value and natural beauty make it a highly recommended destination.
"The youngest Croatian National Park, but for many the most beautiful one. It is located on the longest Croatian Mountain and has a lot of trails through nature to discover.
The most famous one being Premužićeva trail, which is miracle of construction! Built 1930-1933 with no machinery help, it extends all the way through National Park and beyond, from Zavižan to Baške Oštarije (57 kilometers long!)
In the National Park there is Restricted Nature Preserve called "Rožanski i Hajdučki kukovi", rocks with amazing beauty, which are accessible only through Premilužićeva trail.
With a lot of peaks, rocks, valleys, huts and shelters it is paradise for hikers, climbers and mounteneers."

"This is so much better than Paklenica NP and costs almost twice as less. You can drive all the way up there and you don't even need to walk more than an hour if you don't want to. The valleys and the greenery are closest thing to paradise. Even if you choose to walk in order to explore more, it is not too steep."
Mark Marku
"Good for a nice walk. The mountain top Hut is not a restaurant but a mountain hut. You get drinks and can make your own food. Accommodation is also available. The last 7 kms after buying the ticket is the typical mountain road with stones here and there. Good experience going with kid."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Engineering Marvel: Premužićeva Trail
This trail is the primary gateway to the park's most dramatic geological features, including the Rožanski i Hajdučki kukovi, a protected area of stunning rock formations. Hikers can experience the raw beauty of Velebit, with its deep valleys, sharp peaks, and unique flora. While the full trail is a significant undertaking, sections of it can be enjoyed for shorter walks, offering a taste of its grandeur.
Traveler Tip: Even though the trail is considered well-built, sturdy hiking boots are a must. The weather can change unexpectedly, so always be prepared with appropriate gear and check forecasts before setting out.
Navigating the Mountain Road
Expect a bumpy ride, dust, and potentially challenging terrain, especially if conditions are wet. Driving slowly and steadily is key to avoiding damage to your vehicle and ensuring a safe arrival. The road's condition means that while you can drive close to the park's main attractions, it's not a leisurely cruise.
Community Advice: Be prepared for your car to get dusty! Many visitors mention the significant amount of dust kicked up on this road. If you're concerned about your rental car's cleanliness, consider this before your trip.
A Breath of Fresh Air: Velebit vs. Other Parks
The accessibility is another key factor. Unlike some parks that require significant hiking just to reach the main attractions, you can drive quite close to the heart of Northern Velebit. This allows for a more relaxed experience, where you can enjoy stunning views and explore the alpine botanic gardens without an arduous trek, though ample hiking opportunities are available for those who seek them.
What Visitors Appreciate: The park is praised for its stunning valleys and greenery, offering a landscape that feels almost paradisiacal. The ability to experience high-country beauty without extreme climbing is a major draw, making it accessible to a wider range of visitors, including families.
