Beat the Crowds & Heat

The Walls of Dubrovnik are a must-see, but can get crowded and hot, especially in August. Aim for early morning (8 AM) or late afternoon (after 5 PM) to avoid peak times and the intense sun. Consider purchasing the Dubrovnik City Pass for better value if you plan to visit other attractions.

Essential Gear for the Walls

Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable due to the many stairs. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses as shade is scarce. While there are cafes on the walls, prices are high, so packing your own refreshments is wise.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Walls of Dubrovnik for their breathtaking views and historical significance, calling it an absolute must-see. However, the high ticket price of €40 is a common point of contention, and the intense heat and crowds, especially during peak season, can detract from the experience. Planning for early morning or late afternoon visits is highly recommended.

"As with everything else in Europe it seems all attractions are becoming prohibitively expensive. At 40 Euros, this is no exception, but it is a site that cannot be missed. We purchased our tickets in advance which is recommended ...skip the lines. We also got there early (9:30) and were off at noon. Crowds were relatively light and we beat the heat! The crowds were much larger as we were exiting. The visit was excellent with tremendous pictures. Walking the perimeter of the old city atop the walls is hard to beat. While there are lots of steps up and down, there were lots of opportunities to take a break. It is a lot easier to navigate this attraction at your own pace without crowds and heat. It is not hard to imagine the congestion in some places along the route with bigger crowds. Take lots of water and remember, not a lot of shade.

Even at 40 Euros, we recommend visiting this historical site."

"The Walls of Dubrovnik are an absolute must-see if you come to Dubrovnik. We visited in August around 11 AM, and it was already very hot, so I would definitely recommend going either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The last admission is at 7 PM, but it’s best to go at least two hours before closing so you have enough time to walk the entire route, take photos, and enjoy the views without rushing.

There are a couple of places along the way such as small bars and ice cream stands where you can rest in the shade, which is very helpful if you visit during the hottest part of the day. Still, I highly recommend bringing plenty of water with you because the prices for drinks and snacks on the walls are quite high.

Another important tip is to buy the Dubrovnik City Pass. It costs €40 and includes entry to many attractions around the city. Since the Walls of Dubrovnik alone also cost €40, the pass gives you much better value for your money.

Walking the walls is truly an unforgettable experience. The views over the Old Town, the terracotta rooftops, and the Adriatic Sea are absolutely stunning, and you really get a sense of the city’s history. It’s one of those experiences that defines a trip to Dubrovnik, and I would recommend it to everyone visiting the city."

"I recommend to get a one day Dubrovnik Pass for €40 because the city walls is a must. If you only go for the wall ticket, it seems like €35, why not get a day pass, and you can pop into Maritime Museum during the wall walk.

I don’t think buying three days or seven days ticket is a good idea, because all the attractions only have ONE time access. For example, you can go onto the city walls for one day, you can not go onto it on day 2 or day 3 if you have three days pass.

Walls Walk needs a degree of fitness, it concludes about 4-5 kilometres walk, 400-500 steps up and down. Besides, it’s the heat. It could be up 28 degrees even in the end of August. It is feeling like burning in the sun on the walls. Please remember to keep hydrated and cool. There are a couple of cafes and some small stores to get some cold drinks and rest on the walls.

Also I recommend to do the Walls walk in the beginning of the day, like go up at 8 in the morning and come down at 10 when it’s getting hot, and also getting very very very busy with the groups, guided tours and tourists. Some areas are likely the bottle necks because it’s narrow. Of course, later in the afternoon is also a good time to go, no groups and cooler.

Hats, sunglasses and sun cream are the must with your water bottle."

The History and Fortifications

The Walls of Dubrovnik are a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for their exceptional preservation and historical significance. Constructed primarily in the 14th and 15th centuries, these formidable fortifications were designed to protect the prosperous maritime republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik's former name) from Ottoman and Venetian threats. The system comprises an impressive array of ramparts, towers, bastions, and gates, stretching for approximately 2 kilometers around the Old Town. Reddit

Key defensive features include the Minčeta Tower, the highest point of the walls, offering commanding views and serving as a crucial stronghold. The St. John's Fortress and Fort Revelin further bolstered the city's defenses. The walls themselves are up to 6 meters thick in places and stand between 4 to 6 meters high, a testament to the engineering prowess of the era. Walking along them provides a tangible connection to Dubrovnik's past as a powerful and independent city-state. Reddit

Visitors can explore three main entrances to the walls: Pile Gate, Ploče Gate, and St. John's Fortress. The walk is a journey through history, with interpretive signs and the sheer scale of the architecture speaking volumes about the city's resilience and strategic importance. It's an immersive experience that allows you to truly appreciate the defensive genius that kept Dubrovnik safe for centuries. Reddit

Navigating the Walk: Tips for a Smooth Experience

Walking the Walls of Dubrovnik is an unforgettable experience, but it requires some preparation. The entire circuit is about 2 kilometers long and involves numerous stairs, with ascents and descents that can be challenging for some. It's crucial to wear comfortable, sturdy footwear as the stone pathways can be uneven and slippery, especially after rain. Reddit

Hydration is paramount, especially during the warmer months. While there are a few cafes and kiosks along the walls selling drinks and snacks, their prices are significantly higher than in the Old Town. Bringing your own water bottles, a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen is highly recommended to protect yourself from the intense Mediterranean sun, as shade is scarce. Reddit

To make the most of your visit, consider going early in the morning (around 8 AM) or late in the afternoon (after 5 PM). This strategy helps you avoid the peak crowds and the most intense heat of the day. The views are spectacular at any time, but the softer light during these periods can also enhance your photography. The walk typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours, allowing ample time for photos and breaks. Reddit
