Reviews Summary

Playa Grande is widely praised as the best beach in Montezuma for swimming and relaxation, offering expansive sandy shores and a tranquil atmosphere. Visitors appreciate its natural beauty, wildlife, and suitability for beginner surfers and families. However, some note that the beach can be dirty at times, and the walk or drive to access it requires some planning.

"Easily the best swimming, boogie boarding and safest beach in the area. Waves were not particularly huge the day we were there, but occasionally, a 2-3 meter wave would roll in. They are somewhat fast breaking, so perhaps not the most exciting for experienced surfers. Expansive beach at low tide when we arrived. Plenty of sandy beach (mix of white and black) with no hidden rocks, except right near where the beach begins (and they're not particularly hidden). Did not experience any riptides or serious undertow since the beach is quite shallow. Really love this beach!
We had a lovely breakfast at Ylang Ylang, so they had no problem with us parking there. The drive to YY from Montezuma town center goes across a sandy beach section, so it might be best with 4WD or AWD car or ATV. The hike to the beach from Ylang Ylang took a leisurely 30 minutes in flip flops, carrying a chair, bodyboard, water, and snacks (we did not bring any valuables, just in case). I stopped often to take photos, too. There is a moderately steep up and down section just before you arrive at Grande. If you were wearing normal shoes and moved at a good pace, it could be closer to 15 mins.
Just after Playa Colorada, the trail goes up into the palm trees for a bit. If you miss the trail entrance, you can pick it back up on your left at the end of the beach, although during high tide, It looked like the higher trail might be a requirement.
We saw a total of about 20-25 people total during our 3 hour adventure. It started raining, so the hike back was a bit slippery in spots.
Tons of cute red beach crabs skittered in and out of their holes - and a lot of hermit crabs, too)."

"It is a long sandy beach, which most tourists pass back and forth on the way to the waterfall Cocalito. It is very hot during the day, so it is good to walk here in the morning. The beach is not very suitable for swimming due to strong currents. On the other hand, there is an excellent opportunity to observe animals in the adjacent vegetation. we have seen capuchin monkeys and several species of birds. Take plenty of drinking water with you."

Marek Kumprecht

"Best beach in Montezuma by a long way. Beautiful large beach rimmed by jungle. Read up on the people who preserved this beach - Nicolas Wessberg and Karen Mogensen - and get inspired! Worth the 30min trek from Montezuma."
