What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally find La Paz Waterfall Gardens to be a worthwhile and beautiful experience, praising the stunning waterfalls and the diverse wildlife sanctuary. While some find the entrance fee steep, many agree the up-close views and educational aspects justify the cost. The on-site buffet is often noted as good value.
"I enjoyed it more than I thought! I was debating between just checking out La Paz from the road (for free) versus buying a ticket to the "Waterfall Garden". I am glad I went with the later. The waterfalls inside (Magia Blanca, Templo, Encantada, Escondida) can look even better than La Paz. Additionally, from the road, it will be difficult to get a good picture. It's totally worth it to visit the gardens as you will get to experience 5 waterfalls (including top view of La Paz) from up close and get some nice pictures. Additionally, they have animal sanctuaries and hummingbirds that you can check out. I'd recommend adding the lunch option - it was a good, filling buffet. Expect to spend around 1.5 hrs checking out the waterfalls at a comfortable pace. The walking isn't difficult but expect some steep stairs up/down. The waterfall trail ends at a nice gift shop and restroom from where you take a shuttle for back uphill (how convenient)! Make sure to check the return time of the last shuttle. If you check out all the animal sanctuaries and have lunch, can add another couple of hours. You can buy tickets at the entrance or buy them beforehand to save time as large groups can delay the check in."

"A fantastic way to engage with some of Costa Rica’s amazing wildlife whilst also supporting its rescue and protection.
Get up close to birds, monkeys, snakes, frogs, humming birds, pumas and jaguars before walking the (quite challenging, but well maintained) pathways to visit the waterfalls.
The buffet style lunch was good value, tasty and varied with plenty of veggie options as well as meat, alongside soft drinks (and a pay extra bar).
Probably the only negative would be you have to get a shuttle bus at the end to get back to the start as it’s along a road. The queue was so big and the traffic to jammed that we just doubled back the gardens instead."

"We went here in our last day in Costa Rica. The waterfalls were beautiful. Be prepared for a bit of a walk and steps. We had a good lunch. One plate was enough for two. The flowers and the birds and the butterflies were amazing. I found the caged animals a bit sad. The drive up into the mountains was definitely worth it."

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
La Paz Waterfall Gardens is about a 45-minute to 1-hour drive from San José, depending on traffic. Many visitors opt for a rental car, which offers flexibility. Alternatively, numerous tour operators offer day trips from San José, often combining La Paz with Poás Volcano. Some tours include transportation and entrance fees, which can be convenient. The drive itself is scenic, winding through the mountains.
The drive can be 'harrowing' for some, especially if you're not used to mountain roads with sharp turns. However, many find it well worth the effort for the stunning views. If you're renting a car, ensure it's suitable for mountain driving. If not, a guided tour is a safer bet.
Public transport options are limited and can be time-consuming. It's generally recommended to rent a car or book a tour for a more convenient experience. If you must use public transport, you'd likely need to take a bus towards Vara Blanca or Cinchona and then arrange local transport to the entrance.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens is located in Alajuela Province, approximately 30-40 minutes driving distance from Alajuela city. This makes it a relatively accessible destination for those staying in or near Alajuela.
If you are staying at The Peace Lodge, shuttle services are typically included or readily available. For other accommodations, it's best to inquire directly with your hotel or consider booking a tour that includes transportation.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Ticket prices can vary. Online prices are often around $44 USD for adults and $20 for children, but some Reddit users have reported seeing lower prices, potentially around $16, if paying at the entrance. It's advisable to check the official website and compare prices before your visit. Look out for special offers on sites like Yuplon.
Buying tickets in advance can save time, especially if you want to avoid queues, as large groups can cause delays at check-in. However, some travelers suggest checking prices at the entrance, as they might be cheaper. Consider your travel style and the potential for discounts.
A standard ticket typically includes access to the five stunning waterfalls, the wildlife sanctuaries (including jungle cats, monkeys, toucans, and sloths), the butterfly garden, hummingbird feeders, and the aviary. Some packages may include lunch.
Yes, keep an eye out for promotions on local deal websites like Yuplon. Sometimes, booking through specific tour operators or as part of a package deal can also offer savings. Check their official website for any advertised discounts.

🎫 🏞️ Onsite Experience
Most visitors spend between 3 to 5 hours exploring the gardens, waterfalls, and animal sanctuaries at a comfortable pace. If you plan to have lunch and thoroughly enjoy each exhibit, you could easily spend a full day here.
The trails are generally well-maintained and manageable, but they do involve stairs, some of which can be steep. The paths lead down to the waterfalls and then require a shuttle bus to return to the main entrance area. Comfortable footwear is a must.
You can see a variety of Costa Rican wildlife, including jaguars, pumas, monkeys, sloths, toucans, macaws, snakes, frogs, and butterflies. The park functions as a sanctuary for rescued and injured animals.

Yes, photography is highly encouraged! The waterfalls offer stunning backdrops, and the wildlife provides endless opportunities for memorable shots. Be mindful of any specific rules regarding flash photography in certain areas.
🍽️ 🍽️ Food & Dining
Yes, there is a buffet-style restaurant on-site that offers a good variety of dishes, including vegetarian options. Many visitors recommend adding the lunch option to their ticket for convenience and value.
The buffet lunch is generally considered good value, though a single glass of wine can be quite expensive. The cost is usually included in some ticket packages or can be purchased separately. It's a filling meal that can sustain you for the rest of your visit.
The buffet typically includes a good selection of vegetarian options. While specific vegan options might be limited, the variety usually allows for a satisfying meal for most dietary preferences. It's always a good idea to ask staff if you have specific needs.
Generally, it's best to check their policy on outside food and drinks. However, given the on-site dining options, it's likely that bringing substantial outside meals is discouraged. Small snacks and water bottles might be permissible.
While the on-site restaurant is the most convenient, there might be a few local sodas (small Costa Rican eateries) in the nearby towns of Vara Blanca or Cinchona if you prefer to venture out. However, most visitors opt for the convenience of the park's buffet.

While generally encouraged, always be mindful of signage regarding photography, especially in animal enclosures. Avoid using flash photography directly at animals, as it can startle or harm them. Respect the wildlife and other visitors.
A versatile camera with a good zoom lens is ideal for capturing both the expansive waterfalls and the details of the wildlife. A wide-angle lens can be great for the waterfalls and gardens, while a telephoto lens is useful for animal photography. Don't forget extra batteries and memory cards!
Drone usage is typically restricted in national parks and private reserves like La Paz Waterfall Gardens to protect wildlife and ensure visitor safety. It's best to assume drones are not permitted unless explicitly stated otherwise.
