Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise La Fortuna Waterfall for its breathtaking beauty and powerful cascade, calling it a 'must-see' in Costa Rica. The challenging 500-step hike is acknowledged as a workout, but the refreshing swim opportunities and stunning scenery make it well worth the effort. Some note that swimming directly under the falls can be restricted depending on conditions.

"It cost $20 per person to access. Parking is easy. To get to the water fall it is 500 steps down. It is easy to get down and a bit of a pain coming back up so just take it slow. There are a couple of spots to sit and catch your breath. When we went the waterfall was too strong to allow swimming so maybe check before you go. There is a place downstream to swim though. If you want it without tourist go when it opens. Worth a visit and a swim. They have a bar so that is motivation to make it back up. They also have a gift shop. Worth going to for sure."

"The waterfall was amazing! You could swim and hang out in the creeks the water felt like a cold plunge so refreshing.
There was 500 stairs so it was a hard time coming back up. But they have stopping points on the way to take breaks."

"A Must See. Breath taking. It’s a bit of a work out getting there but worth it. There are over 500 steps. Plenty of rest stops. We weren’t able to swim near the falls due to heavy rains but did get to go in the river. Cool and refreshing. Bring water shoes if possible."

The Waterfall Experience

La Fortuna Waterfall is a breathtaking natural wonder, standing at an impressive 70 meters high. The water cascades powerfully into a clear, cool pool at its base, surrounded by vibrant, dense rainforest. The journey to reach the waterfall involves descending approximately 500 steps, which can be a significant workout on the way back up. However, the effort is widely considered worth it for the stunning views and the refreshing experience of being so close to such raw natural beauty. InstagramReddit

While swimming directly beneath the main cascade might be restricted due to safety concerns, especially after heavy rainfall, visitors can often swim in the designated areas of the Fortuna River downstream. The water is known for its invigorating coolness, offering a perfect way to refresh after the hike. Remember to wear appropriate footwear, like water shoes, if you plan to enter the river. InstagramReddit

At the top of the falls, you'll find amenities including restrooms, changing rooms, a gift shop, and a bar. This area provides a convenient spot to relax, grab a drink, and reflect on the magnificent scenery before or after your descent. Some visitors also mention a butterfly garden nearby, adding another element to the visit. Reddit

Navigating the Steps and Staying Safe

The 500 steps to and from La Fortuna Waterfall are a significant part of the experience. While the descent is generally easier, the ascent requires stamina. Fortunately, the path is well-maintained, and there are numerous rest stops strategically placed along the way. These platforms offer benches and opportunities to pause, catch your breath, and admire the surrounding jungle. Pace yourself, and don't hesitate to take breaks as needed. InstagramReddit

Safety is paramount, especially when dealing with natural water bodies. Always heed the advice of lifeguards or park staff regarding swimming conditions. The intensity of the waterfall can change, and currents can become strong. If direct swimming is not advised, the river downstream often provides a safer alternative for a refreshing dip. Wearing sturdy, non-slip footwear is crucial to prevent accidents on the steps and around the wet areas. Reddit

Beyond the immediate waterfall area, the surrounding rainforest is rich with biodiversity. Keep an eye out for local flora and fauna. The mist from the waterfall can create a unique microclimate, so be prepared for a slightly humid environment. Bringing a waterproof case for your phone or camera is a wise precaution to protect your electronics from the spray. TikTok
