Reviews Summary

Fort San Fernando de Bocachica offers a glimpse into colonial history with its impressive stone structures, but visitors should be prepared for intense heat and potential challenges with local guides and boat transfers. While the historical displays are interesting, the fort and surrounding town are not always well-maintained. Clear communication regarding costs and expectations is crucial for a positive experience.

"A local scooped us up from the dock, spoke great English, and treated us to a wonderful 30 minute tour. Half hour was plenty of time out of the boat due to the heat. He worked tips and we tipped generously."

Kellie Davis

"Disappointing. The Fort has some interesting historical displays, but it is not well kept. The town itself is either falling apart or half built. Roads are un paved a d rocky. The trip was even worse. We tried to follow other reviews and suggestions, but the information from them did not match our experience. Most sources said the port tax was 14,000 CPO per person; we paid 3,000 CPO per person. Most sources said the boat ride would be 7,000 CPO per person and to be wary of "guides" upon arrival in Bocachica. A person at the dock bugged us, and we kept telling him we wanted the boat ride and no guide. He finally pointed to a boat and said it is the one we should take. He then introduced us to a mam, indicating that the boat was his. He then said that it would be 50,000 CPO per person, round trip. The person we were introduced to did not pilot the boat but was another passenger. When we arrived, he then started leading us, but in the opposite direction of the fort. When we were finally able to stop him, we were able to find out he was taking us to a castle. We said no, just the fort, and that we would go on our own. He then insisted on leading us to the fort, where he demanded more money. We paid another 20,000 CPO, and he left us. After touring the fort a bit of the area around it, we returned to the dock. All the people at the dock directed us to another pier with different boats. Several different people 1asked for more money, but we insisted that we had paid for a round trip, naming the guide and showing pictures of the boat. Eventually, someone explained that it was a different company, and we had to pay an additional 10,000 CPO per person for the return trip.

If you want to go, use a reputable tour service."

Russell Murphy

"Our island tour stopped off at this location to give us a little history and culture before we snorkeled.

The tour was great, lots of interesting little bits of info like they built tunnels that deliberately narrowed and then when invaders went down them they were trapped and executed them. Life lesson, don’t go chasing waterfalls or unknown tunnels but stick to the tunnels and waterfalls you are used to.

It gets hot, extra sunscreen and some water is a good idea.

Also a tip, two guys on our boat thought the coconuts were free when offered, they are not. Goes without saying but just a heads up to avoid an awkward situation."
